Help! Going golfing for first time tomarrow. What should I wear?

I am a guy who doesn't have a clue what to wear for a last minute invitation to go golfing on Sunday. Short pant? white sports shoes? Are brown leather casual shoes OK? I don't want to buy golf shoes. White socks, regular or low cut? Please help.
Thanks.

Plaid knickers and bright matching knee sox. Shoes with a nonslip tread.

!) are you golfing in Maine? bring a wind breaker
2) Definately wear a collared shirt (not a dress shirt) but, a polo-style shirt
3) you can never go wrong with a pair of tan pants
4) Brown leather shoes--short socks is my vote

I'll let somebody else answer about standard dress code at fancy country clubs, but for most other public golf courses around the country you'd be safe with a pair of khaki shorts or long trousers, a collared golf or polo shirt and a pair of tennis shoes or sneakers.

Stay away from blue jeans and T-shirts (though some places allow them). Remember, golf is anoutdoor, "athletic" activity, so dress in clothes that you
can comfortably move around in and that are weather appropriate.

If this is your first time golfing, you'll find that clothing will be the least of your worries....

Thanks Emma and gbhost. I forgot to tell you it will be in the 90's tomorrow. I would feel more comfortable in long pants because I have to keep from tanning do to a skin problem (white legs). Are you sure the brown leather shoes and white socks will be OK? Are golf gloves a necessity or not a biggy for a first timer?
thanks

Honestly--I think I would put both types of shoes in the car and look to see what the host is wearing..

I agree the sock think and the brown shoes sounds funny and not the norm but, my husbands golf shoes are white and brown and he wears short white socks..

Golf glove-- not sure on that one... if you have tume in the morning why not pick one up??

What time are you playing?? Do you have clubs?

Around noon. No clubs. I will be using a friend's clubs. The person who invited me! But I don't dare to ask him what to wear.

I think you will be fine..
Golf glove-- not necessary would be my opinion...It is your first time.. see if you like it!!
Shoes/sneakers with a good tread
bring both and ask host.. he know it is your first time.. he will probably be giving you pointers while you play so, asking him about the shoes will be easy!!
