Help - funeral tomorrow: NYU - Flushing?
Just found out that I need to attend a funeral tomorrow morning in Flushing at 10 am and I'll be staying at the NYU dorms, arriving tonight.
Does anyone have suggestions about how to do this -- a car service or a cab -- any suggestions about good companies? Is public transport out of the question? I'll be at 33 Washington Square West and will need to get to Edward Jammie Funeral Chapel, 141-26 Northern Boulevard, Flushing, New York 11355. It feels odd to post this here but I'm scrambling to leave town for a conference in a few hours and thought I might get rapid, accurate responses from you all. thanks so much. |

I would check with the funeral home to find out your best transportation options. Who knows, maybe there is an easy way to get there by subway.

According to hopstop.com you'd have to take the #7 subway and then change to a Queens bus. I agree you should use either a car service or a taxi. If you use a taxi, go to maps.google.com and get directions b/c the driver may not know where it is. You can hail a cab in Manhattan to go to Queens but not likely you can do the reverse. You'll have to phone for a car to pick you up in Queens.
Four two's (phone 718- 746-2222) is a local Queens car service that might work. |
thanks -- just called they said they're 3 blocks from the last stop (main street, flushing) on the #7 line. Any estimates about how long this might take?
I'll try to figure out how to get to the 7 from NYU or will take a cab to the nearest station. tia |
mclaurie -- thanks for the hopscotch link (from my previous post too)...
I wasn't able to get directions to Flushing with it -- isn't that a part of Queens? Perhaps I will try to take a car/cab there and the train back. |
From your place, you would take the B, D, F, or V from West 4th St and change to the 7 at 42nd St.
Take the 7 train to Main Street-Flushing. I wouldn't bother trying to get a bus. I'd just walk the .6 miles to the funeral home. |
Here's the subway map.
http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm When you use hopstop you have to change the borough for your destination to queens (it automatically reads Manhattan). |
thank you so much everyone, you're the best.

Disagree with ellenem, either the Q13 or Q28 (MTA) bus departs about every 12 minutes from 39th street which is conveniently located only one block away from where the #7 train ends in Flushing.
http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/busqns.pdf If you ride in the first or front cars in the number 7 train and exit left continuing in the direction the train enters the station, take the left escalator and exit straight up onto Roosevelt Ave walk about a minute and then turn left at McDonalds and walk towards the Gyro/Halal vender wagon on 39th street where the Q13 and Q28 are likely to be parked waiting. Either the Q13 or 28 will get you to 141st Street after a few stops on Northern boulevard in about 10 minutes, if you see the KFC restaurant you've reached 150th street and you went too far and should signal to get off the bus. My [-o< condolences. |
Correction, you want the 2nd stop on the Q13 or Q28 for Bowne street on Northern Boulevard, if you see Staples on the left this is Parsons street (3rd stop) and you should get off.
Funeral home is between Bowne and Parsons street on Northern Boulevard, there is no 141st Street #o. Alternatively you could exit subway as described in above post and walk up Roosevelt until you reach Bowne street, turn left and walk another few blocks until you reach Northern Boulevard. |
For me, if I just missed a bus, I know that I can walk the .6 miles in about 12 minutes, so I'd just walk it. It's up to you . . .

Reply to ellenem,
Agree when the weather is dandy((#))walking is fine, but if there's a :-"gust((R)) I find a bus can be mighty handy. :S- |
Just wanted to thank everyone for you great advice -- I took a cab to Flushing for $45 and returned to NYU via 7 train which took over an hour but can't beat the price...
It was a last minute stressful situation so I really appreciated all the detailed info and help with this one. thanks again! |
Glad we were able to help make a trying time a little bit easier.
