Help! - Century 21
I am coming to New York next weekend from London and have been told all about Century 21 in Manhattan.

However I have today heard that the Manhattan branch is closed. Can anyone confirm this?

Also, I'm keen on buying some discount designer wear. Are there any 'must go - must spend' places wheer I can pick up good fashion bargains?

Many thanks in advance.

Dave
London

Yes, the manhattan store is still closed. There are other locations, in Brooklyn, New Jersey and Long Island. You can reach the Brooklyn one by subway. Check their website for more info: http://www.c21stores.com/. I don't know when the Manhattan store will reopen. I had heard March but can't find anything definite on that. it's a great store. If you can squeeze in an afternoon in Brooklyn to shop and see the sites there, it's probably worth it.

Time Out New York has a good shopping section in their magazine and some articles are reprinted in their website (www.timeoutny.com) Also New York Magazine (www.newyorkmetro.com) has a Sales and Bargains column.

I think C21 was the only *must* go for discount shopping.

Other good-ish places:
Daffy's
Loehman's (I think the one in the Bronx is supposed to be better)
Filene's Basement (nothing like the oriringal in Boston, which was the original Century 21, with $10,000 fur coats for $200 etc.)
Nice Price (ladies only)
Syms

Century 21 is right across the street from Ground Zero. It got damaged...as you can imagine.

I miss it so much!

Filene's Basement is another good option. There are two locations that I know of: 6th Avenue & 19th Street, and Broadway & 79th Street. The latter store is better. It's on the Upper West Side, right where you exit the 1 or 2 train on 79th.
