HELP! Best EDGY art galleries in Los Angeles??
Hi Everyone,
I have a question for SURFERGIRL, or any other LA experts who would like to chime in. I moved to LA this year and would love to know where the best, edgy art galleries are. I'm looking for places that really push the UP-AND-COMING painters/ sculptors. Downtown? Edgemar Center (Santa Monica)? Venice? Also, which are your favoirte ART WALKS? I know they happen at certain times of the year. Which are your favorites? Many thanks! |
Well, I'm no expert on art in LA, let alone EDGY art :).
I just wanted to let you know about 1st Thursdays in San Pedro, where you can tour all the downtown San Pedro galleries and lofts. Since the 1st Thursday in December is this coming Thursday, you can check it out. More info at: www.1stthursday.com. There are usually street vendors and live music, and most of the galleries offer refreshments. |
It's not edgy, although there may be a visiting exhibit, but I hope you make time to see the Getty Museum while living there.

As a former SoCal gal, I would say go to Melrose Ave--it's all "edgy".

Bergamot Station in Santa Monica is a great place to see lots of cutting-edge art in one spot.
Galleries up and down La Brea have some edgy, some mainstream, but you'll find a lot to see. Venice has studios all over. My hometown of Long Beach has little galleries up and down Fourth Street and Broadway-- Fourth around Cherry and Junípero especially. Laguna Beach and San Clemente are other places where you'll find edgier fare among the stuff for the more conservative art lover. |
My neighborhood- Miracle Mile/ West Hollywood has lots of great art galleries. As someone else said, up and down La Brea, but also 3rd St., Beverly Blvd., Melrose Ave., Santa Monica Blvd., etc.
Also, if you REALLY want edgy, Boyle Heights, East of downtown, in the industrial district--- there's some TRULY edgy art lofts goin' on there. I've only had the courage (art-wise and street-wise) to go once. |
Not an edgy gallery but the Los Angeles County Museum of art has a Magritte exhibit through March.

Thanks to all of you! I had a few people recommend the downtown area. Since we just moved here, we would love to purchase some paintings. Also I like supporting young and struggling artists.
Cheers! |
In East LA, Self help is having their annual Christmas sale this Saturday, Dec. 9th.
