Hell's Kitchen (Clinton)
 

I'm thinking of possibly staying in Hell's Kitchen (50th & Broadway), or between 48th & 49th. Are there any locations that I should try to avoid staying in?

The area is fine and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from in all price ranges. I would avoid staying on a lower floor due to street noise. Try for an upper floor towards the back of the hotel. I also suggest not staying west of 9th Avenue. Other than that it's strictly a question of which property to stay in - some are nicer than others.

50th and Broadway is a wonderful spot for a visit to nyc. Very central and very populated. I agree with the last poster, west of 9th Avenue is not ideal, but you're not really close at 50th and Bwy...you're actually in Times Square. I live nearby and am happy to answer any other questions you may have! Happy travels.

Have stayed west of 8th in that area and had no qualms whatsoever. The name comes from a very much bygone era -- used to be downscale with stereotype of poor people in 2-room walk-ups, miserable and inclined to scream at each other on hot afternoons. Jackie Gleason's couple in the Honeymooners lived in a place that could easily have been Hell's Kitchen.

Now it's a perfectly fine place (for the most part) to stay or even live. And great great restaurants!

I wouldn't call 50th and Broadway (or anywhere on Broadway) "Hell's Kitchen". It's part of the Times Square neighborhood, and has a ton o' foot traffic.

Gotta agree wtih Suzanne. Definitions of Hell's Kitchen have it as far north as 52nd st or even 59th, but always west of 8th ave, so it wouldn't include 50/8th. But close!

Thanks for the replies! Gee, unfortunately, those first two didnt pan out, and now our best bets are on (of all things) 48th and 9th. So my question now is, how much west past 9th is okay? sls15, what do you think?

I am not sla 15, however I would not recommend staying west of 9th Avenue. During the day I would say it's fine a few blocks past 9th Avenue as long as you are aware f your surroundings. At night it's another ballgame.

48th and 9th is absolutley fine.

9th avenue in that area is really cute. tons of great restaurants and lots of people out and about.

I walk my dog alone in that area at night without a problem. My only suggestion is that if you leave your hotel late at night, you don't head west on foot.

I agree - 48th and 9th is fine and yes.... even later at night. I wouldn't suggest staying out near 10th or beyond but the only hotel I know of out there is the Travel Inn on 42nd(which I've always been leery of but has gotten okay reviews in this forum).

My cousin and her family stayed at the Travel Inn on 42nd St, a month or so ago and LOVED it. There is a nice pool and free parking. Also there's a small deli right there for breakfast pasteries and snacks for the room. The room was big enough for her/hubby and 3 kids.

You are very close to Times Square there, but far enough away that the noise and traffic are much less. Lots of restaurants within walking distance and the subway is a couple of blocks away as well.

They offer some great rates, I think she paid around $100 a nite.
