Heathman Hotel in Portland

We are going to Portland over Labor Day, and I've heard a lot of nice things about the Heathman Hotel. Has anyone ever stayed there, and have any feedback.

If so, and you know the best way to get a decent price, let me know. Thanks,

I read, either on this site or in a guidebook or two, that the rooms at the Heathman were nice but small, so we stayed at the 5th Avenue Suites. Our room was large and attractive, and there was a free wine-tasting every evening.
We went right after Labor Day last year, and there was a special with breakfast and parking included listed on the hotel web site.

Stayed at the Heathman in Decmeber. It is a lovely small hotel. Our room was not large it is true, but had nice extras like fresh ground Peet's coffee and teas and a French Press, bottled spring water in the room. The staff was lovely and helpful. There is wonderful artwork everywhere. It has its own unique style. I thought the location was good as well. We used their web site directly. They were running a managers special at the time. I would just make an inquiry to them to see if there are any specials when you are planning to go.

I have stayed at the Heathman many times. It is classy, understated and one of my favorite hotels. The service and food is great, too. Yes, the standard rooms are on the small side, but still quite comfortable. If possible, see if you can get an upgrade to a junior suite.

If you're not picky about what kind of room you get, Portland is a fantastic deal with Priceline. For $55 a night you should be able to easily get a 4* right in downtown. We did so over Memorial Day (got the 5th Ave Suites).

Go to www.biddingfortravel.com for a list of 4* Portland hotels.

We like the Heathman, too. My favorite part is the video library- there is a menu of movies and you just place a call and it shown on you television.

5th Avenue Suites is nice and has much bigger rooms but feel newer kind of shiny when compared to the Heathman, which is a classic.

I was sitting in the Heathman on Monday having lunch with my dear friend, a Portlandite. He loves the Heathman. However, when the question was posed on where to stay the Heathman or the Hotel Lucia..he said the Lucia hands down.

I've stayed at the Heathman and just about every other good hotel in Portland and haven't found one I really like. However, I haven't stayed at the Lucia--thanks for the tip...I'll try it.

I do, though, really like the restaurant at the Heathman. The food is excellent, and the prices seem reasonable compared to Seattle (where I live).

The Lucia was written up in a recent issue of the New York Times. Check the NYTimes web site and look for the Frugal Traveler column (I didn't agree with everything the writer said about Portland, but the Lucia does sound like a good hotel).
