Heartbreak Hotel-Memphis
Planning a trip to Memphis, need some advice on where to stay, thought that the Heartbreak Hotel might be fun...but is it nice? is it difficult to travel from this part of Memphis to Beale street/downtown? thanks for any input!

That area of town is definately off the beaten path. I would recommend staying downtown and visting Graceland separately if you're interested in downtown attractions.

There's a new Hampton Inn and Suites at Peabody Place in downtown Memphis that's quite nice. It's adjacent to Beale Street.

if you stay downtown, do you need a rental car to get to graceland or is it close enough to taxi? thanks.

The Heartbreak Hotel is terrific, obviously more so if you are an Elvis fan. There is a courtesy bus from the Graceland Plaza next door which takes you to Beale Street(I think this runs every half hour), and the hotel also provides a courtesy bus from the airport (if this is relevant to you). If you do stay at the Heartbreak, get a King Suite(only a fraction more expensive than an ordinary room, but really large). You would want to use the courtesy bus to go downtown as a taxi is really expensive(about $25, if I remember correctly).

I agree with my namesake. The Heartbreak Hotel and Graceland are in a bad part of Memphis. Unless you're a major Elvis fan and want to be surrounding by memorabilia, I'd advise you to stay downtown, which is really quite nice. There are lots of good restaurants and hotels downtown and Beale Street is fun, too!
