Heard of the St Moritz in NYC
 

Expedia has a discount rate for the St Mortiz II at 50 S Central Park for the weekend I'll be traveling. Description sounds good, and the price is right, but I can't find it in any of the travel guides. Ant input would help.

The St Moritz is an old hotel facing Central Park. It was slated to be redeveloped into condos and then that evidently fell through and I then heard it would be redeveloped into a luxury hotel. I have never stayed there but have heard lots of negative things about it althought it certainly has a good location. Perhaps someone who has actually stayed there will give more info.

location, location, location...if it's cheap, give it a try cause the location can't be beat. It faces Central park south at the corner of Sixth (Ave. of the Americas) and is about a block from the Plaza and Fifth Avenue and everything. I used to stay there a long time ago, then it was bought by the Helmsleys' and I don't know much since then. I have pleasant memories and if you can get a room facing north (the park) you really can't miss. Used to be an ice cream/ bar/ thingy in the lobby called Rumplemeyers. Certainly not the Plaza but it's probably not $500 per night either. Sharon

I've stayed there twice, though not recently at all. First time was probably 30 years ago on trip as a teen to NY with my mother--seemed very exotic and special at the time, probably because of my age, first visit to NY, and the location ( which is great). Second trip was with my wife, 15 years ago--same great location, but the place was run down then, dingy interior, cheap flourescent light fixtures in the room--sort of depressing. If they have remodeled since then may be worthwhile, but if not, just keep thinking about that great location.

Stayed there 10 years ago when I got engaged. An older hotel with tiny rooms. Great location. If you want to watch your money and you just need a place to sleep its a good choice. I was told that it was the first, or one of the first, properties owned by Donald Trump. <BR>
