Following the American Indian idea of naming your child for traits you wish him or her to have: "Sleeps At Night" or "Eats Well and Neatly."

I knew someone named "Electrolux" - her mother thought it was a Greek reference, and this was many decades ago, before the vacuum cleaner was widely known.

Does anyone remember the guidelines regarding number of syllables -- for example, the combination of a 3-syllable first name, 1-syllable middle name, and 2-syllable last name is supposed to sound good. You have to be careful with 1-syllable, 1-syllable ("John Doe"), supposedly; and 1-syllable first name with 4 or more syllable last name, or vice versa is also supposed to be a problem ("May Hinglefanger" "Pheratonathan Jones").

I always really liked Ismene (IZ-mih-nay) from the play "Antigone"

I also love the name Lila!

Islandmom, congratulations!! I saw this thread and had to reply.
My mom went to high school with triplets: Faith, Hope and Charity. No kidding.
On a recent trip to the New England Aquarium with my son, there were groups of preschool/school age kids there with various parents and teachers in tow. We were looking at the seals outside when a man ran by in hot pursuit of a little girl calling " Calypso! Calypso, come back here!!" Please do not name your child this, I beg you.
I am more of a traditionalist, admittedly. My husband and I are thinking of having a second child. I like Sarah, Kate, Paige, Caroline and Robin for girls' names.

Calypso. That's funny. Reminds me of a time several years ago I was in an enormous outlet store. "Silky" was there as well. Apparently, 9 year old Silky was not a well-behaved child. I don't know what she was doing that was so bad but her mother screamed at her the whole time. Her mom was a very well-put-together professional looking woman -- not at all what I would have expected. Anyway, last time I saw them Silky had tears running down her face because mom was about to take her to a dressing room & spank her. As if the name wasn't bad enough.

I'm new to this but having read the previous posts I would like to offer a few words of advice. Don't name your baby Ruth..as most will know 'Baby Ruth' is a make of candy in the US! If you've ever watched 'Friends' you will know.
Personally I like the name Niamh, it's Irish and (correct me if i'm wrong) i think its pronounced Neve - to rhyme with 'leave'.
Some of the names I have come across in my job are: Luke Sky Walker (wtf!), Tommy Leigh Jones, Tina Turner, Summer-Tonishia, Champaigne, Tory, Stacey (as a boy's name), Jannathun, Dilly, Kristofer, Stevie-Lee (Girls name), Dollars (as in the US Currency), Raine, India, Sapphire, - I could go on....
P.S. Congrats, and gd lk finding a name!

Congratulations islandmom!

I was pregnant last year and if we had had a girl we were going to name her Sydney Alexis. As it was a boy, we named him Maxwell (Max) Harrison. My other son is named Gray Lane, after my father and grandfather.

Best of luck, and best wishes!

We named our daughter Rosalyn Christine. She is now 12 years old and and have had many people over the years tell us it is a pretty name. We just liked the way Rosalyn sounded and Christine is a family name. A young mom I know just named her newborn daughter Wednesday Paisley (she was born on a Friday).

Kauaiian beaches:
Girls: Kealia and Polihale (Polly Holly Kahuna-What a name).

Boy: Donkey or Shipwreck Kahuna.

This is one reason The Pope allowed us not to breed. :)>-

Speaking of baby names, just heard yesterday that an aquaintence named their baby girl Ireland. It's a beautiful name for a place but it seems so awckward for a persons name.

Smel? You would name a girl Smel? Good grief!

Tansy Feb 1st, 2004 03:15 PM

I'd just like to say that I think middle names are completely overrated. If you are using a middle name to incorporate a family name, okay. But otherwise, just forget it! I think having a middle name, just for the sake of having a middle name, is ridiculous. Besides, with all of the hyphenating that goes on these days, eliminating middle names could be a helpful trend. I actually kept my last name when I got married, but am now considering changing my middle name to my husband's last name (because my middle name has no familial significance whatsoever and seems pointless!).

I hate these pretentious parents that give a child four names, for no good reason. "Deacon Oswald Prentiss White" or some such fluff.

BrimhamRocks Feb 1st, 2004 03:18 PM

Hold your horses, Marilyn....

Perhaps the names that heavenly0410 lists are just ones that he or she has encountered while traveling. They might not be suggestions, per se (one hopes not, for some of them!!).

:)

Oh boy...speaking of baby names, just read this on CNN:

Dandreb and Smel. Now that is going to make me chuckle for a long time.

Tansy, so you don't approve of George Herbert Walker Bush?

Jenesis for a girl and Genesis for a boy? Is it like Bobbi for a girl and Bobby for a boy? And what if Pepsi ends up marrying Coke (mentioned early in the post).

As a child I always thought I had a boring name, but people can spell/pronouce it most times without error. Maybe I should be thankful for it.

Now THAT is a loaded question. :)

Good dodge Tansy.

I'm thinking about that poor kid named Khan. Just think of all the teasing he'll get. And if he ends up a decent sports player, the newspapers will have fun with 'wrath of Khan' headlines.
