It's a great location, but I've always thought it was more SRO than hotel.

What's SRO?

It was an SRO (Single Residence Occupancy) until a year or so ago. They may still have some permanent residents but they started renovating about a year ago. I went by during the summer and asked about the renovations and was told the renovation was still going on. It is near the corner of 79th and Columbus. It is a nice looking pre WWII building. Neigborhood is very good. Across the street from Natural History Museum and lots of upscale retail shops and restaurants on both Columbus and Amsterdam. Subway station is close by at Broadway and 79th.

SRO = single room occupancy. It's a place where the city places the homeless when shelters are full.

Sorry, that might not be entirely accurate. As RQF indicates, SRO's sometimes have more permanent residents -- they serve as low-income housing for people who qualify.
