Hawaiian Music

Of course, Iz's Facing Future is the ultimate Hawaii CD. if anyone doesn't know it, get it. But I've listened to it about 5,000 times. His other CD's don't really offer additional songs, but I have those too.

SO...ANYONE..... Give me the names of some other Hawaii CD's that are great like Iz's are great. maybe there are none.

iamq Jul 19th, 2006 04:02 PM

Hapa's first("Hapa")is a classic and among my all time favorites. You probably won't like it as much as I do.

slbrown Jul 19th, 2006 04:08 PM

Hi imaq. Any chance that has the original song about Hasegawa'a General Store? I have been looking for that song on the internet and not able to find it. But that name rings a bell to me of who might have recorded that song.

iamq Jul 19th, 2006 04:13 PM

Not sure, I don't think so. Have you checked i-tunes?
-Bill

bluefan Jul 19th, 2006 04:14 PM

iamq Jul 19th, 2006 04:14 PM

kmpordagee Jul 19th, 2006 04:29 PM

You also must check out Keali'i Reichel (vocal) and Ledward Kaapana (slack key).

MelissaHI Jul 19th, 2006 04:41 PM

Just google "Hasegawa General Store" and you'll get a buncha stuff. Here's one lead:
http://www.squareone.org/Hapa/h43.html

For a while I was into Keali'i Reichel. I still love Jerry Santos. For some reason, I was also really into Ululani Guerrero. Amy Hanaialii Gilliom and Willie K are still super popular. As you can see, I could go on and on! For that classic Hawaiian music, why don't you just listen to it on your computer, broadcast from Hawaii?

Hi Bill!

aloha Jul 19th, 2006 04:46 PM

The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, of which Iz was a member, were really great. I recently got the CD "Na Mele Henoheno" and I love it.

iamq Jul 19th, 2006 04:47 PM

The sweet sound of the islands! 105!

Thanks and hi to you too, Melissa.

For those new to Hawaiian music, there are some truly great compilation albums which will let you hear "the best of the best" -- both in music, and in musicians. I could point you to them, but that would be too blatant. I'll just let you know that mele.com has all of the following titles: :D

Destination Hawai`i
A Taste of Hawai`i
Hula Records' Hits
Hawai`i: Music from the Islands of Aloha
Pride of Punahele II
Pure Hawaiian
Pure Hawaiian - `Elua

Check out Jamie Lawrence. He is a local, and has been preforming for 25 years. I hired him for my daughter's wedding. He has an amazing voice. You can order his cd's

Re: "Hasegawa General Store"

slbrown emailed me directly, and I was able to point him to two older recordings of this great song, on these CDs:

MAUI'S SUNSET MUSIC
HAWAII'S SUNSET MELODIES

These versions were done in the 1950s/1960s.

LEAKYTIKI1 Jul 21st, 2006 08:29 AM

Do you have Ke Ala A by Iz?
I can't think of anyone who is as good as IZ!!!
Try Jack Johnson or Jake Shimabukoro?
Aloha!!

Barbara5353 Jul 21st, 2006 11:42 AM

Hawaiian CD's are about all I listen to. My newest CD is "Barefoot Natives", which is the duo of Willie K and Eric Gilliom. I just saw them last week on a west coast concert tour.

Other CD's I play frequently (some already mentioned) are: Kealii Reichel,
Makaha Sons, Dennis Paveo, Melveen Leed, & Jerry Santos.

Slbrown, three yrs ago we drove north of Kapalua, taking the road that goes through NW corner of Maui. In the village of Kahakuloa, a lady at the first stand we came to was playing a CD of "local music, from here" which we bought. Turned out she's the wife Richard Ho'opi'i. It was a special way to be introduced to Ho'opi'i Bros music..and it'd be a lovely drive for your next trip!

bashfulLV Jul 21st, 2006 01:55 PM

Anything by Olomana is wonderful - they have several CD's.

Ai84 Jul 21st, 2006 01:57 PM

Na Leo is also good for contemporary Hawaiian. Jake Shimabukuro's Dragon cd is really good. It's all instrumental Ukelele not really traditional Hawaiian but more soft jazz.

MelissaHI Jul 22nd, 2006 01:42 PM

This is also not traditional Hawaiian, but locals favor Cecelio & Kapono, sort of like the "Simon & Garfunkel" of Hawaii. Each has individual CDs, the most recent being Henry Kapono's "The Wild Hawaiian."

MorganRey Jul 22nd, 2006 04:50 PM

Keola and Kapono Beamer.

dusty56438 Jul 22nd, 2006 06:29 PM

Kapena is good Kapena Collection is their best CD. Collection II is also good.

Na Leo Pilimehana is good.

Cecilio & Kapono or just Kapono's solo cd's. C&K is in English. Kapono's new CD, The Wild Hawaiian, mentioned by Melissa just out is all or mostly Hawaiian language.

Kalapana is good. Much like C&K.

And I agree with slbrown. IZ Facing Future is the ultimate Hawaiian CD.

Keali'i Reichel is good. Kamahiwa, Collection - One is a good CD

vinolover Jul 24th, 2006 05:30 AM

I love Amy Hanaiali`i Gilliom, her Hawaiian Tradition album (with Willie G) is great!

klf214 Jul 24th, 2006 12:37 PM

Wow, just downloaded Iz's Facing Future from iTunes....great CD! :)

TMWeddle Jul 28th, 2006 01:10 PM

I just found this online radio station from Maui - you could listen and when you find an artist or song you like then look for the CD. http://www.hawaiianrainbow.com

sunshine Jul 28th, 2006 09:13 PM

Thanks TM. We're going to Maui in Dec. and I was listening to this Hawaiian radio station this afternoon.

hulajake Jul 29th, 2006 08:28 AM

Hapa's Maui is very good also most of Keali'i Reichel, Also a young lady named Raiatea Helm beautiful voice and a wide range of music. We also became fans of the Brothers Cazimero after this years May Day concert great show.

Bikom Jul 29th, 2006 02:49 PM

Because of this thread, I downloaded IZ's Facing Future, and haven't been able to stop listening to it. A fantastic CD, thanks for the recommendation. I also downloaded an iTunes iMix called The Best of Kohala, (Hawaiian acoustic guitar music), which is also great. If I close my eyes..........................

BayouGal Jul 29th, 2006 02:53 PM

Same here, Bikom. But I don't have The Best of Kohala YET! :)

TMWeddle Jul 29th, 2006 05:08 PM

Bikom, I can't find an I-tunes mix named "Best of Kohala" - there are several Kohala albums there but I do not see that mix. Feel free to contact me BC at [email protected]

Bikom Jul 29th, 2006 08:44 PM

It was a little difficult to find. try this, do a search on iTunes for Kohala, click on the album KOHALA, and on the right should be a few recommended iMixes, Best of Kohala was number three when I just did it. Its a compliation, so if you have alot of their music, you probably have most of the songs already, but I think they put alot of thought into the mix, very soothing, wonderfully done. let me know if this helped.

TMWeddle Jul 30th, 2006 03:18 AM

Thanks! Finally found it! Kohala is a new find for me - I like it a lot. I've been listening to a lot of Hawai'ian music recently getting ready for a trip to Maui in February. Of those I've heard lately Keali'i Reichel has become a favorite. (IZ still ranks on top.) Reichel will be in concert when I'm there - debating on whether to go see him.

Bikom Jul 30th, 2006 08:38 AM

So glad you found it TM, have a fantastic trip in Feb. Maybe you can post a trip report and make me jealous when you get home :)
