Hawaiian Folk Music

My husband and I will be back to Hawaii in October (our 5th visit and we can't wait!!). We've fallen in love with Hawaiian music - almost every night we listen to it during our "de-stress" time together after work.
We're staying mainly on Oahu this time - Any suggestions on places to go to hear the "real" thing?
Thanks!
I am not sure what you are referring to when you use the term folk. Are you talking about Gabi Pahinui, Genoa Kiawi, old falsetto singers? Or are you listing to modern music of people like Keali Reichel (highly recommend), Rob Kahakaulau, Hapa.

I think it is mele.com that has a concert calendar of the Hawaiian groups performing through out Hawaii, US and Japan.

You can still see a group called "Olimana" (Sp)at the Hilton Hawaiian on Oahu, Friday thourgh Sunday". It can be fun here when they have friends in the audience for inpromptu hula.

You also want to check out the star bulletin when you are on the island. A lot of groups return in the fall and there are some festivals too. Check out gohawaii.com calendar to see what is on when you are in town.
Sarah, the group's name is Olomana and they are wonderful to de-stress by!

Another place for good live music is Aloha Tower Marketplace. 4 places offer live local music--Kapono's, Chai's Island Bistro, Don Ho's, and the Big Island Steak House.

Once you hear the real thing, you may want to head over to the Tower Records near the Ala Moana Shopping Center as they have a wonderful collection of Hawaiian music CDs.

Thanks, everyone. I'll check out the websites - and we planned to hang out at the Marketplace this time for two or three nights. We love Keali Reichel (but he's always in Japan or on the mainland when we go to HI!!), Iz, slack key guitar, chant, some of the older music - I called it "folk" because that's where the music stores in New Hampshire put what little of it they carry!
We're counting the days till we're back in the golden sunlight and scented breezes.
Thanks again!
Make sure to catch Kapono at Duke's Beach club also. He has been there both times we have been in Honolulu, although I can not remember which day of the week. While you are checking out CD's, check out the old Cecelio and Kapono CD's.Of course he has his own place, but I am not sure how often he is there. Calendars are important so you can maximize opportunity.
