Hawaii with older parents
 

We are traveling to Hawaii with my in-laws (in their late 60's and early 70's) this coming December-January. We'll be staying a majority of our time in Waikiki (at the Hyatt and the Kahala) but have an additional 7 days that have not been planned as of yet.

We were thinking a couple days in Kauai and perhaps a different area of Oahu for a few days. Any recommendations for cities in Kauai and/or a different area of Oahu (other than Waikiki) to stay? My in-laws love hiking (although nothing too strenuous given their age) and the beach as well.

Spend the week on Kauai. The Poipu area.

Since you are already staying at two different places in the Waikiki area, I wouldn't add two more places. Moving around 4 times in a 2 weeks stay seems like an awful lot of time transitioning place to place, that will take away from time actually doing things.

I've only been to Maui and Oahu so don't have a feeling for Kauai, but suggest perhaps adding only one more location. If you kept it on Oahu (like the North Shore would be an obvious choice) you'd also save money on not needed 4 more plane tickets.

I agree with others - don't move around so much. Kauai would be my recommendation - stay a week. I'm also a fan of Poipu. We spend a month there every year. Or if you choose another place, stay a week.

Can you change your reservations on Waikiki to all be at one hotel? Changing hotels just eats up your time and doesn't give you any advantage.

That time of year on Kauai I would definitely stay in Poipu, the weather will be sunnier, and many of the beautiful North Shore beaches may not be swimmable except Anini and maybe Hanalei (poor snorkeling at the latter).

Thank you for the responses! We unfortunately don't have a choice with the change in Waikiki hotels (brother-in-law's family will be with us for the week we're in Waikiki and those reservations/plans are somewhat inflexible). I think we'll definitely try to spend the rest of the days on Kauai in the Poipu area based on what everyone is saying. Condo might be nice there if anyone has any recommendations. There are very nice condos in the Poipu area. Take a look at what is available on booking.com or similar and come back and ask about specific places.

You can use vrbo for seeking out condos and try contacting owners directly to avoid the vrbo booking fee. Booking.com has one of the highest fees that is usually reflected in the cost, also check out AirBNB.

There is only one condo complex that I know of that is right on the beach in Poipu and that is Kiahuna Plantation. It gets good reviews but the pool is across the street. Otherwise take a look at Poipu Kapili.
