Hawaii with 67yr old Mom

what have you done in Hawaii
with older folks?
We are not beach buffs, so want
other interesting things to do.
Could we handle Volcanoe National Park? Many Thanks!!!

Amy, I'm a 66 yr. old mom, and pretty active (please NO skiing, rock climbing or camping!) so think about how active your Mom is now--and ask her what she would like to do, and go from there. I'm sure she knows her limitations, and she might surprise you with what she might like to do. We went to Hawaii 7 years ago and drove all around Kauai & Hawaii, did some light walking through gardens, etc, took a couple of tours. We did go to Volcano NP and walked around the trails fairly easy. There are some great places to just go to, stop, and get out and look. Have a great time with your Mom and in Hawaii.

Amy,
I took my mother to Maui 5 years ago when she was 69 (my husband stayed home with our cats!). She had a marvelous time and still talks about how great it was. She was, and still is, in excellent health and enjoyed walking on the beach every morning (a faster walk then I do I might add) before we went out sightseeing, and again in the late afternoon. I see no problem with Volcano Nat'l Park - I did not take my mother to the Big Island but have been there several times with my husband so I know the place reasonably well. Are you just going to the Big Island (Hawaii) or elsewhere. Maui is my favorite island and my mother enjoyed going to Hana very much and also up Mt. Haleakala. I think we walked through every store in Lahaina at least 4 times over the 7 days we were there also. There is a botanical garden on the Big Island that might be nice, also Akaka Falls is a must see. Really it depends on the older persons health and interests. My mother can just about handle anything and probably could out walk me most days so you never know.

Amy -- My grandmother goes to Hawaii every year, by herself, with friends, or with groups. She is 82 years old this year and her favorite thing to do in Hawaii is boogie boarding. I'm not kidding. Last time she went, she went "diving for pearls" someplace and they made the pearls into jewelry for her and she loved it. It seems like she has more fun every year she goes.
If you happen to go to Oahu, be sure to visit Pearl Harbor, I think your mom would enjoy that. There will be LOTS of wonderful things for you AND your mom to enjoy together. And you will be pleasantly surprised by the large amount of grandmas and grandpas you see over there. Have a great trip.

Took my 75 year old mom two years ago. She's not too active. We got the "touristy" things out of the way first on Oahu. Went to see Don Ho and then went to Pearl Harbor (among other things like shopping and activities at the hotel). The last half of the trip we "toned it down" and went to Kauai to relax. A "must do" on Kauai is a helicopter ride - - that was the highlight of the trip. We also charterd a fishing boat and spent the day on the ocean.
