Hawaii: Which island, which resort

In December I would like to combine a trip to Los Angeles with a week in Hawaii from Dec 22 to Dec 29. Have never been and I am looking for a resort on the water that is not in an urban area. Prefer an area with other resorts in close proximity and restaurants other than the ones in the resort. Looking for a relatively quiet area for sun, swimming and relative peace and quiet. This is Christmas week and we would like to avoid anyplace where there will be lots of kids. Which island and which resort would you recommend.<BR><BR>Please don't suggest doing a search. There are so many Hawaii posts it would take days to sift through all of them.

Four Seasons Big Island but it's probably already sold out. I would stay away from Maui to avoid kids. Otherwise, The Orchid or Mauna Kea resorts are very pretty. There is a small shopping center a little down the road and a new movie theatre about 15 mins away.

P.S. better book quick as most hotels are probably already sold out ;-)

I would recommend either the Big Island or Kauai.

This is an impossible request. Not in an urban area, but close to restaurants and other resorts, in a quiet area without kids during Christmas week. Good luck. You're a little late to book Christmas week in Hawaii, and just about every where will have many kids because this is a school break period.

to: a@aaaa<BR><BR>You are really lazy. There are many postings that say "Hawaii, which island?" or something very similiar. It wouldn't take you long to do a search. Get off your keyser.

Echo Aug 22nd, 2002 10:13 AM

Hey "a", you'll get more useful information faster by doing a search of "hawaii" and "best" or similar.<BR>You'll get only a trickle of responses this way since most people get tired of naswering this same question over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and ove............................................... .................................................. ..........

Check out the Hyatt on Maui. Best hotel I know!

I agree with the others. It MIGHT be too late for a Christmas trip, but good luck.I have stayed on most all the islands. Kauai is really quiet. There are still good restaurants, but they won't be next door to your hotel. The Princeville Resort is the nicest resort on that island. Really lush island. It is where King Kong, etc was filmed. Do a helicopter ride if you go. I prefer a little more activity though. You can go to more upscale resorts and have fewer kids. Try the Ritz or Four Seasons at Maui. They are both wonderful hotels. The Grand Wailea is nice, but the cool pool with all the slides attracts the kids. You are aking stuff that contradicts each other..quiet, no kids, but lots of restaurants, etc. I think you might like the Rtiz in Maui. It is close to Lahaina which has some good reataurants, etc, but the Ritz is a couple of miles away, and it is a really nice hotel..very relaxing, few children.

FS Maui is terribly over crowded with kids. Stick to the islands without any kid club activities. I've been to all the islands and the BI is the best.

Hate to disagree but I have been to all the islands and MUAI is the best by far !!

Thanks to those who provided useful information. As for Echo and Haw it took me less than ten minutes to read the 11 responses to my post, 9 of which provided information that will help me make a decision. The number of Hawaii postings yesterday and today - close to 250. Wading through all those posts would take an hour or two. 10 minutes as opposed to an hour or so - Which would you choose?

Marti Aug 22nd, 2002 05:37 PM

I agree, and how many of those 250 are old posts?? Renovations occur daily. <BR>My vote?<BR>Maui<BR>Sheraton Black Rock.

Ah, but most of the answers to this post were totally inadequate or completely lame. If you search, you'll find some thoughtful, detailed info that will help you make an informed decision.

I have to disagree about Maui. The poster is looking for an island that is more quiet. Maui is turning into another Oahu with all the development and traffic. I believe the poster wants peace and quiet and although I've stayed at numerous resorts on Maui there has never been peace and quiet w/o kids. And every resort except 4S nickel and dimes for everything (25 for lawn chairs).
