Hawaii Tourism Down
 

I just read the statistics about the tourism in Hawaii. It is down quite a bit since 2001. What do you think it would take for Hawaii to get it's visitors back? I know that not much can stop me from going, but a lot of people seem to be travelling closer to home. The Japanese tourist numbers are especially down. Should they offer more incentives and lower the hotel prices? I know personally that airfares have been ridiculous. I finally got a special on airfare but it had me thinking.

I'd like to see hotel prices go down. $300+ for Sheraton, Westin and Hyatt is ridiculous!

I think 911 has impacted it. Imagine if you are Japanese and you can go to Thailand which has incredible beaches or Hawaii with terrorist threats looming.<BR><BR>I tend to think that tourism is down because air fares were high for so long. Like to hope people got smart and did not pay top dollar. However I did so perhaps it is more closely related to terror threats.

I read that the Japanese tourists spend considerably more per day than Americans.<BR><BR>We hadn't planned on another Hawaiian Vacation. But if they offer some bargains we probably would plan another vacation there.<BR><BR>

I was sucked into paying a relatively high rate for airfare but definitely, definitely would not have paid that much if I wasn't going there for my honeymoon. If I was just going for a regular vacation, I would have not gone to Hawaii due to the long travel time (East Coast US) and high plane tix.<BR><BR>My job sucks right now and we're not terribly busy (which means I'm not getting paid too much) which means I am not interested in uber-pricey travel.

someone told me today about standby travel LAX to Hawaii. I think it is called airtech? In Manhattan and they have a website, think its www.airtech.com . I have not looked them up friend could have been misunderstood. But hey check them out 212-219-7000.

ok briefly looked at website looks like Hawaii $119 but you have to give first three days availability so it seems that it is more for people with flexible schedules, teachers, college students.<BR><BR>Friend is using it to Spain this weekend. Will let you know how it goes if anyone is up for unconventional travel.

Hawaii Tourism down???? Just returned from Maui, and have never seen it so busy.

I believe that Hawaii measures tourism by the number of dollars spent not the number of visitors.

Hawaii tourism was way down from Sept-March, (most people plan their vacation 6 mos. in advance) but since April, I understand that things are back to normal. There was a period when most people did not want to get on planes, and it's a long swim from the mainland.

I think tourism was back up for a few months. I seem to recall reading somehwere that June numbers were on par or better than last year but that it's starting to go down again. I've been to Hawaii twice this year due to the great deals that have been offered from the west coast. So if there's another $299 air fare sale to Kona, I'd probably go again.

re the japanese (and some other asian tourists):<BR><BR>a strong reason visitor numbers fell after sept 11 was cultural--for many japanese, vacationing and having a good time in the u.s. would have been grossly insensitive behavior toward a host country that was still reeling. they held back out of respect and empathy. by the same token, after any tragedy (like an airplane crash) in japan, people associated with companies, institutions or families involved are expected to show restraint for some time by not going golfing, partying, etc. i know japanese who postponed visits to hawaii for this reason.

The Japanese are still traveling,but not as much to Hawaii.Japanese visitors are down about 19% from last year to Hawwaii, but their numbers are up to the US mainland and Europe.<BR>A recent article in the MauiTimes suggested that Hawaii had become "old hat" and that Japanese were seeking new adventures. Hawaii had become their "Niagra Falls", a honeymoon standard that had become passe.

When my hubby was in the service, we lived on Oauhu. I was called "Hallie" and constantly reminded how much they hated military/tourist. It was their island. The rent/hotels are outragious because you have to have them--they know it. I believe people are wiser now and realize there are much more beautiful places (Play de Carma is one) I do not think you could get round trip fare, 7 day incluse motel right on the beach, beautiful pool with waterfall bar for $900 a person in Hawaii. A taxi for 4 people was $10. (I saw on a blog for the same distance was $80 in Hawaii)
I believe Hawaii has just outpriced themselves.

I think the term is "Haole" not "Hallie" meaning a white person and cetrtainly NOT from the islands.

I disagree that Hawaii has "outpriced" itself..prices are up EVERYWHERE and not just in Hawaii. Airfare prices to Europe have zoomed.

Japan is in a recession and it makes sense that not as many Japanese folks are coming over to shop in those high-end Waikiki stores where there used to be a bunch of t-shirt shops.

A lot of people aren't traveling as far due to money ssues; why would Hawaii be excluded from that trend??????

My thoughts were correct. My BF just got back from Hawaii yesterday. She has been to Belgium, Rome, Italy, Greece, Prue, Glopposis Islands, Jamaica, Cozumel, and she said will not go back to Hawaii. She was impressed with the Big Island, but the cost vs other places was not worth the money.
Thank you for telling me the correct spelling of Haole. This whole race, born on the island, 1/64 blood, never made any sence to me.
