Hawaii: snorkelers - how does Oahu compare with Big Island and other questions
Hi - in process of planning a two week Hawaii trip. We are definitely doing one week on Kauai. We love kayaking, hiking and snorkeling.
I was thinking of the second week on Oahu as my husband is a nut for history and we both want to do Pearl Harbor, etc. Is the nature part of Oahu (snorkeling, etc.) as good as the Big Island? Enough adventures to keep us happy for a week? We will be renting a car and have no problem with driving around the island. Thanks for any input. sue

You will love Kauai.
But be very careful as to the beach you select to go snokeling. Currents and surf can pick up suddenly. There is a nice snorkeling beach in Haena area. Forget the name, but it's in most travel books/sites.
Hanauma Bay is a tourist magnet for snorkeling on Oahu.
On Maui, Molokini is nice.

Aloha Sueoz,
O'ahu is great for history and touring, hiking, exploring and snorkeling. IMHO, a week on O'ahu will barely touch the surface. It's a great island, full of options... one of my pers favs.
Read the recent thread, "Why I love O'ahu too". It's got some great insight of those who love this island.
Happy planning.

Just FYI, if you're going to be on Kauai between May and September and you REALLY love kayaking, I'd recommend the 16 mile Na Pali paddle. We did it in June and it was an awesome way to see the coast there.
I have lots of details in my trip report here: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...1&tid=34508517

Not yet familiar with Oahu snorkeling though most refer to good snorkeling at Hanauma Bay.
Our best consistent snorkeling has been with the Big Island. On Kauai, Ke'e Beach on a calm day is our favorite spot, followed by Poipu beach. Near Haena beach park, Tunnels(Makua) beach is also regarded as a good snorkel spot.

Please report back on your experience.
