Hawaii - SHARK ATTACK
Teen-ager attacked by large shark. Foot bitten off. Beaches closed. Link:

http://www.thehawaiichannel.com/hon/...25-190306.html

Oh stop with the the shark alarmism already. It's not even summer yet. This stuff usually doesn't get going until June.
Going into the ocean?
Guess what?
There are big animals there and riptides and lightning strikes and swimming cramps that occur with regularity, and anyone venturing into the water must accept certain risks.
Same as driving on the interstates and eating at restaurant buffets.
|
Oh, I don't know, Chicken, maybe its that for some strange reason the thought of dying in a 2 second long interstate crach or a one second long lightning is not quite as bad AS BEING EATEN ALIVE BY A LARGE ANIMAL.

One thing to take away from that article that Teo left us with is that this kid was swimming in murky water a definate no no for anyone that Knows Hawaii waters or any waters with a habitat of sharks nearby.

It had been raining alot in Kauai and strong kona winds helped create this dangerous environment. There were only 5 people in the water at 12pm and this boy was the furthest out at about 150 yards. It is not like the situation in Florida last summer where it was a sunny day and the boy was only 30 yards from shore as most of us are when we swim. Just something to remember.

Anybody know if Poipu beach is reef protected further in?
|
Must be nice to be so blase, Chicken. "There are big animals so get over it", and yah Patty, it was his fault, what a jerk. He should have known better. Are you both Tin men?
|
youpeople no one is blaming here just trying to add perspective. I felt better knowing it was murky water and there was a sign. Also wanted to point out this sign to people who might not know it and plan travel to Hawaii.
|
That Hawaii is just no damn good. Save your money and go to Tennessee for the same type of people and scenery.
|
RED ALERT:
warning to all tourists, there was a shooting in Merced California yesterday.
A Sherriff's Deputy killed 4 kids then committed suicide.
PLEASE stay away from California.
And especially avoid all Shrriff's Deputies.
You just can't be too careful these days.
|
Colin and Hoola we don't need your added irony people who are freightened enough to stay away would never get on that big bad airplane to go anywhere anyway. It's not enough that noone else on the forum is responding? All you are doing is taking this post up to the top

hoola-

Did you just compare Hawaii to Tennessee? C'mon. Tell me you're joking. Tell me you're just trying to get a rise out of some people. Tell me someone paid you to say that. Tell me something, anything. Hawaii is one of the most beautiful places on this earth.

Tennessee is beautiful...no doubt, but it is NO Hawaii.

I have not been to Hawaii yet, but as from what I can see...there is NO comparison.

Hawaii looks lush, tropical, etc.

Tennessee is full of mountains, but the southern kind of mountains...not the Hawaiin kind.

My mother in law lives in Tennessee and I love to visit her. I'm just trying to talk my husband in to the loooonnngg flight to Hawaii.

Both im sure are very beautiful...but STILL....NO COMPARRISON!!
|
Isn't the beach that this happened on near a lot of big hotels like the Sheraton and the Hyatt among others?

Would anyone suggest that I change my reservations from the Hyatt to another place due to this? We really want to swim but I'm not going to go in the water in Kauai if there is danger of a shark attack.
|
Wow are folks really that chicken over shark attacks. I do a lot of diving and when I looked at "shark attack" statistics Hawaii is so unbelievably low compare to places like Florida etc. The chance of getting bitten is very small given the tropical location. Pay attention to your surroundings but don't let fear own you.
|
Not only is Hawaii beautiful, but tasty too! I just love those chubby, slightly browned tourists, especially the Tenessee natives. I was going to wait a few months, but we're very hungry. Let the shark, er, I mean tourist season begin!
|
You know guys, we had no idea that Tennessee was different from Hawaii. Tee Hee.
|
Everyone should be aware of the possible
risks of swimming in the ocean. A little
girl was only knee deep in the waters off Cocoa beach a few days ago and she was bitten by a shark, thank God she survived. She required surgery and is in the hospital. I vacationed in Cocoa
Beach a couple of years ago and a local
who flys over the beach said " If you guys knew what was near your legs in the water you would never go back in". No
problem with having fun "Just be aware fo the possibilities".

Chicken Little: "Shark Alarmism"??? Bet you can't say that three times real fast!
|
One time I was swimming, and I thought I felt a pinch on my leg. Man, did I run like heck. I thought for sure I was a goner. I was so relieved to see my older brother grinning when I finally got out of the pool.
|
Good one John. Thanks for the laugh!
