Went to Kauai in Sept and made all reservations after we arrived. If you want sunset at the Beach House though I would call ahead if you're going to eat there early in your stay. It was our last night so I could call after I got there. If you were thinking Tidepools you may want to do the Beach House instead, way superior food and much better view. Beach House is right on the ocean near Spouting Horn. We didn't have reservation for Brenneke's but you should. Can also be made when you get there. Roys you definitely need reservations and if you're going early in your trip I'd call ahead. Tidepools I called that day. Since I didn't have to worry about scheduling at sunset since there is no view of the ocean I had no trouble. Have fun and bon appitit.

When we went to Maui last summer, we made reservations anywhere we wanted to eat watching the sunrise. The one place we didn't do this (our hotel), we ended up eating at 8:00 and agreed the dinner would have been much better looking out onto the sunset. I think we tried to book that 4 or 5 days in advance and it was booked that early.

If you don't want to catch the sunset (because you are eating at Roy's or someplace else) it might not be a big issue but better safe than sorry - you can always change reservations once you are there!
Skip Tidepools - go for Beach House
and get a reservation at sunset. You
will never forget it.

Tidepools is highly overrated. Poor food and lots of money !!!
I would echo the others in that if you want sunset dining at the Beach House be sure to reserve ahead and be sure to tell them you want the first seating, whcih is the sunset seating. You will not have a better location in all of Poipu, or the entire island for that matter, to view and enjoy the sunset as you sip your favorite cocktail. Superb. The food is good, but the location is the very best! It is a great place to have you last dinner on the island as you will remember that sunset and ambiance only ocean front dining can provide.
Be sure to try Roy's, its also great, and try Piatti at the Kiahuna Plantation, which is a nice restaurant. Ask to be seated on the outside porch and you will have a view of their lovely gardens. It is a plantation atmosphere with good food and service. Not for sunset viewing.
Oh yeah, for the best pizza on the Island try Brick Oven Pizza in Kaleheo, not far from Poipu. Excellent, excellent pizza...No reservations needed. Keoki's Paradise in Poipu Shopping Center is a good place for drinks and the bar has a nice menu if you want something quickly without reservations. Roy's is also in this same shopping center.
Have fun and enjoy all the great pacific rim and local Hawaiian cuisine.
