Hawaii or Mexico
Can't decide where to go....has anyone done both Mexico (Yucatan) and Maui. What are the pros and cons of each? We would like to stay at an AI in Mexico and would enjoy a nice beach, good food and some water sports.
We are about the same distance from each place.
|
Go to Mexico - Hawaii is full of dead travel agents.
|
Oh my, IMHO that is a no-brainer. Maui is paradise, and also on American soil. (Remember the motto, "buy American"?) We've been to both and there is NO DOUBT I will return to Maui again, and never to Mexico.

BTW, there's the water factor, I don't know about you, but I HATE having to pay for water!
|
Hey Travel Agent....

"We've been to both and there is NO DOUBT I will return to Maui...."

What happened to the other half of "we" ??? Will he/she/it be going to Mexico instead ???

|
Hey JJones, for your information, I am NOT a travel agent. If it's any of your business, I'm an asst. prof at a community college. I'm ALSO a Patriot of this great country and will continue to buy American, be it in travel or product. Yes, we have traveled to Europe, but his question did not ask about Europe!

How terribly pathetic that true replies are being maligned; please back off and don't ruin this board for others.
|
Hey "Asst. Prof" - there are two L's in "Travelled" - didn't do too well at "Asst. Prof" school did we ???

And "his" question was "Hawaii or Mexico", who the hell mentioned Europe ???
|
GO AWAY, JJONES - YOU BIG LOSER!
|
I made you lose your temper.....

YESSSSSSSS !!!!!!!!!!
|
Actually there is only one L in traveled. And please stop attacking people. Not everyone interested in or having answers about Hawaii is a travel agent.

Kristy
|
Well I suppose I'll have to E-Mail Microsoft & tell them that the Spell Checker in Word was wrong when it wanted to replace 'traveled' with 'travelled' won't I ?
|
Not to mention Amazon who are selling 'The Road less Travelled' by M. Scott Peck ISBN: 0099727404.
Kevin, based on the little you have said I think you would enjoy Maui more. The weather is nicer, there is a great variety of activities and the food is better and safer to eat. The trip to Hana is great. Yucatan is best for people that like humid tropical weather, that have interest in Mayan ruins and who want to do a lot of diving along the coast or over at Palancar reef. You have to watch what you eat and drink and except in tourist areas it helps to speak a little spanish. The area is flat and inland full of mosquitos. The standard of living in Maui is very much higher than in the Yucatan. We liked the Yucatan very much in years past but we did not stay in the highly developed resort areas. Cancun is more like Miami Beach and not our cup of tea.

In my mind, Hawaii outbeats Mexico by a long shot. When I say Hawaii, I mean not just Maui, but all the islands and all that they have to offer. The total combination of great resorts, great beaches, beautiful tropical mountains, sea cliffs, fantastic waterfalls with pools to swim in, great hikes, all kinds of water sports, the "at home in America" environment combined with the "away in a far-off land" feeling, the great polynesian culture and aloha spirit, etc, etc. There is so much variety on each island and among all the islands. I love Mexico for its nice beaches, watersports and food. It's a great place for romance and relaxation. But Hawaii gives me a much fuller vacation experience.
Oh, and I am sad for those who constantly choose to cut down others for their sincere love of Hawaii. Just because you talk highly of a place does not mean you are a travel agent. I certainly have never been one, nor plan to be one. But I will always gladly promote the place that means so much to me. It may be hard for some to understand, but it is real for many of us non-travel agents.
|
I'm not a travel agent either! I heard though, that those Mexican banditos will rob you on the beach, in your car, in your hotel, and anywhere they can find you! You can avoid this trauma by sticking to American soil and buying American! Those "made in China" stickers you'll see on all the souvenirs are just there to make the shop owners think they got a cheap deal...that stuff is really made right on the islands!

I'd be happy to tell you where to go and how to get there, so just e-mail me! Mahalo!
|
I actually used MS Wrod to spell check it and I checked an actual dictonary. Give me a break.

Kristy
|
Funny enough, I just checked another dictionary and it listed both spellings. But the moral is, don't criticize someone's spelling on a message board. Many times you are typing quick and not spell checking. If that's all you can do to criticize someone, then you ar eobviously very immature.

Kristy

Wow...these replys are overwhelming. I didn't think I would start a mini war by asking a simple question! Since I am not an American, I am not concerned with staying on American soil. I do appreciate all of your suggestions although I think that Mexico must have a lot to offer also as it seems to be booming in the tourist areas. The place I am thinking of staying at in Mexico is a 5* All Inclusive so I dont know as banditos, food poisoning etc. will be a problem. Hawaii does sound beautiful though so I am still undecided. I guess it will all come down to cost.
|
Kevin,
The cost of Cancun is much much less than Maui. But if you can afford it- go to Maui as there is no comparison in the quality, beauty and charm. Cancun is full of all inclusive resorts- if you are on a budget that is helpful.

We went to Cancun the first time in 1980. It had less than 15 hotels at the time. It was wonderful.

We went again in 1990 - it had over 130 hotels. The trees were dead. The air smelled of diesel. The little town that once boasted of not having any traffic lights - still didn't have any. This only meant that it was impossible to get across the street in the traffic.

This second trip was the only trip where we have experienced credit card fraud and it happened twice. One one purchase of a simple dress, the shopkeeper added an extra $0 to my purchase in effect making a $20 purchase into a $200 purchase. Luckily, I had my original receipt and no problem with the credit card company. In the other case, someone at the Fiesta American Hotel, charged over $500 to our credit card several days after we left. We had to send in copies of our airline tickets to the VISA credit card company, proving we were not in Mexico at the time of the charges to get them off our bill.

Mexico can be nice - but not CanCun - It has been ruined by overdevelopment. While it is alot more expensive, if you have the choice, I would go to Maui.

Dear Jjones (also known as Q, earplugs, Miss Maui - you know - all one person with a split personality disorder)

The reason people keep telling you to get a life, is because they feel sorry for you. One day you will wake up to how much of your life you have squandered away trying to annoy people and not accomplishing anything else. It truly is sad. I guess rather than taking it as a put down, you could use this moment to reevaluate your life and see if it really where you want it to be. Let us all, please, have a moment of silence for our poor, lost, multiple personality, constant visitor to this board. . . .
|
I did not know that I stepped into quick sand. We really know both areas fairly well so if you have any more questions you can reach us by e-mail.
|
Hi MMS, so they let you out again eh ?
For you & everyone else's information I am not 'Q', 'Earplugs', 'MissMaui' etc.
It may surprise you to learn that I am not the only person fed up with all the phoney questions posted here about Hawaii from people who have something to gain from it. Now take your medication & get back to your padded cell.
|
Whatever you say Q!

You know there is medication for split personality disorder.
|
Kevin,
Let me try to answer your question and if I repeat anything said above I apologize. I couldn't bring myself to read all the vitriolic posts. ANYWAY -- Maui and Mexico are two way different places, as you no doubt know. Maui is lush, mountainous, beachy, truly tropical. The Yucatan is flat. Period. Now, don't get me wrong. I like the Yucatan. But I like the more primative parts, the less seen parts. There still are some gorgeous, really laid back areas. Cancun ain't one of them. I think Cancun really ought to be a part of the U S, what with all the development. I swear, Cancun is like going to a much more upscale Daytona Beach. Yuck. Plus, there are too many kids there. Another thing, if you're going to the Yucatan in the summer, the heat will be oppressive. It's usually milder in Hawaii. On the other hand, Maui has gotten to be really, really developed too. One resort after another. And (depending on where you're coming from) Maui is certainly going to be more expensive. So, you need to decide what it is you're looking for. Yucatan can be fun if you're willing to get off the beaten path (and sweat a little); Maui is great if you want to be pampered in a lush tropical setting. by the way -- I have never gotten sick travelling to Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica, or Panama. So, don't worry too much about the "water" issue.

I'm not kidding - if Fodors introduce registration I'll register IMMEDIATELY using my REAL name & my REAL E-Mail address & that's a promise. Gotta get rid of those phoney Hawaii posts somehow.......
|
Jjones-

I couldn't care less if you register or not. I just wish you would quite posting your crude, childish balony on this board. I would much rather wade through 100 travel agent posts than be revolted by your constant vulger posts.
|
That's "Vulgar" boyo.....
|
Hey JJ or Q or MissMaui, whoever the hell you are today. Just wanted to let you know I am still "dogging" you (your word not mine).

Still not back in school? Oh yeah, your mommy is still calling.
|
JJones (miss maui, Q, Earplugs, whatever):

I see you have a problem with obsessing over spelling along with your obsession over travel agents.

Please talk with someone in mental health soon - There is medication for Obsessive/compulsive disorder also. I hope they can find something that will not react badly with your Split Personality Disorder medication.
|
"Karl": Why is "Dogging" 'my' word ?
