Hawaii or England
I have a $400.00 travel voucher and was considering using it to fly to Hawaii next summer to visit Maui and the Big Island. I have some friends that think using it to fly to England(London) is a better choice. They feel it's cheaper to fly to England and a more interesting place to visit than Hawaii. I haven't been to either but, have always thought of Hawaii as being the ideal destination. I know it's probably comparing apples to oranges and only a matter of different people's taste in travel but, I thought I might see what people think that have been to both places to help me decide. Can someone out there help me with this decision? Thankyou

I've been to both several times.
They are as opposite as you can get.

Whether you will enjoy one more than the other depends on your tastes, budget, travel background, personality, etc.

Without knowing more about you and what you want out of this trip, etc, it's really impossible to tell YOU in particular, as an individual, which you'll like better.

(An aside, while it is cheaper to fly to London during winter, London is a lot more expensive than Hawaii once you get there, so I'm not sure I'd agree with your friends that London is more economical).
|
Price to fly there also depends greatly on which coast you are leaving from.
|
You have your whole life to go to Hawaii! Go to the UK-too good of an opportunity to get out & see & do fun things!
|
Definately England, hands down the better adventure.
|
London is the top choice!
|
You might want to take a look at the Fodor "Europe" forum. There is so much London info there . See what people are saying about London and if appeals to you. *S*
|
What if tb doesn't want an "adventure", karl?
What if tb wants beauty or exotic scenery?
He/she hasn't told us.

And why is it that London may be disappearing before tb's "whole life", xxx, but not Hawaii?
|
I've been to both and it depends on what you want to do. if you want to hike and see the earth being born via volcanic activity, and bum around the beach, then hawaii.
if you want to see some art and world treasures, do some shopping, than England.
The food is pretty crappy at both places though. Stick to fresh fruit and veggies in Hawaii - the luau fare will raise your blood presure 50 points.
and stick to sandwiches in England.
|
Hawaii, HAwaii, HAwaii!
|
traveller, you speak of the London of old, pre 2000.
The number of excellent high end restaurants in London has increased dramatically since the 1990's.
Prior to that, it was pretty dismal eating.

Still scarcely little convenient good food, though
|
Hawaii has EXCELLENT food! Fresh fruit and fish, unusual ethnic cuisine as well.
|
England. Walk the streets. Ride the trains. Visit their pubs. See the sights. Talk with the people. You'll enjoy yourself, and get a sense of our shared heritage....
|
Europe is sooooo much WORK!!! I have never had a relaxing vacation in Europe. We were constantly on the go seeing this and seeing that. The only real "vacation" in my book involves a beach! Another vote for Hawaii
|
You can always go somewhere and lie on a beach with some palm trees.
GO to London! See the world!
|
To What- because you have your whole life to see other Americans and beaches. Traveling to England is an entirely different experience. Not just the people but the history that is over a thousand years old. Castles, buildings, reminants of many centuries in the past to visit. We don't have that here. It's about broadening your horizons.
|
TB - if you've "always thought of Hawaii as being the ideal destination, then that's probably where you should go! Are you seriously torn between Hawaii and London, or are you just doubting your original choice because of your friends' comments? If you really are equally attracted to both places on a gut level, I'd suggest going to a library or a browsing-friendly bookstore and checking out some guides to each place - books of photography can be the best, at this stage, to help you decide what really appeals to you. You can find similar things on the net as well.

I am from England (but now live in Wales)and have just returned from three weeks in Hawaii. I would go with Hawaii.
the weather is better,it is not as expensive as London (esp if the exchange rates stay the same)and it has much more interesting things to do.
A holiday to England can be very hard work as all the good things too see are very spread out.The food in London is generally very poor unless you pay thought the nose.
Go to Hawaii and see the volcano !!!!!
|
Hawaii, of course. After all, you have your whole life to go to England!

Seriously, you can always fly to London pretty cheaply. From the east coast I've paid less than $300 round-trip. There were flights hovering in the $250 range this fall and next spring. So use your voucher to go to Hawaii.

I've unfortunately spent far more time in England than Hawaii, having never been to the latter, so take my advice for what it's worth.

Linda, I am sorry but your response slayed me, "I am from England and I say go to Hawaii. That killed me.
