Hawaii Logistics & Flight Connections

Getting ready to book interisland flights and need a little help please.

1. Arrive HNL at 2:30 p.m.....I should be able to do a 3:17 p.m. flight on Aloha to Kona, shouldn't I?

2. How much time should I allow to get from the southern part of Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona to the airport? Thinking of taking a 2:41 p.m. flight to another island and was wondering where a good place would be for lunch along the way....

3. Now for the home flight. We have a 4:30 p.m. departure out of Honolulu. I really don't want to leave Kauai one second earlier than I have to. Would I be ok to take the flight that arrives in HNL at 3:30 p.m......or to be on the safe side should I take the one that arrives at 2:30 p.m.

Mahalo.....

and, btw......this is serious....I hope I get a meeting with Dondi! Cause if I do, all you 9ers will get a special treat!

Question 2: I'd allow 40 minutes. When we were in Kona, the traffic on Alli'i drive was frequently slow and backed up.

And I'd stop at the Kona Brewing Co. for lunch because I love their black sand porter and you can't buy it on the mainland. ((B))

I think all your connections are too close. What about delays in arrivals? That could cause you to miss your flights. I'd do 2 hours....

iceeu2 Aug 18th, 2006 09:22 AM

kureiff, what is black sand porter?

jcb Aug 18th, 2006 09:30 AM

I think your connections are too close especially if you are checking luggage (or checking thru luggage).

kureiff Aug 18th, 2006 09:31 AM

Black Sand Porter is a delicious, dark, chocolately beer. Kona Brewing Co. has good pizzas and salads, too.

iceeu2 Aug 18th, 2006 10:00 AM

Do you really not think we can not make a 45 minute connection and an hour connection?

OldSouthernBelle Aug 18th, 2006 10:06 AM

I'd be so worried that I wouldn't enjoy the rest of the trip as much...best to be able to relax about it in my mind!

I don't know...THe 47 minutes from mainland flight to Aloha air seems overly optomistic to me. It might work, if you don't have to pull luggage from the carousel, and if you get in on time and if you can run really fast from your arrival gate to Aloha without having to go thru security again....

Same on the return...if your plane's on time and you don't have to redo security/ag check, you'll be fine. Even going thru security, you'll probably still be fine with a whole hour.

The problem I see is if you do miss this connection, the mainland airline is going to hit you with change fees and it may take another day for you to leave.

But I think MelissaHI has a nice couch at her office....

IMHO your connections are way too close because the security in the HNL airport is still intense, maybe more so after the London "problem" we experienced recently.

Iceeu2 -

Are you checking luggage?? There are cut off times for checking in luggage and minimum time allowances to transfer luggage.

If you are checking luggage through to your final destination, I suggest you call your airline to see what their rule is.

We've only flown into HHN once. Connected with Hawaiian Air. It was confusing and time consuming getting from the mainland arrival terminal to the inter-island terminal for the Hawaiian flight. Could have been just us and the fact that we had been flying for about 20 hrs., but I'd allow more time for that particular connection. JMHO. Good luck.

kamahinaohoku Aug 18th, 2006 10:18 AM

From the Honolulu Advertiser, Aug 10: The interisland carriers said that while they don't anticipate any delayed flights,
"The local airlines are recommending that passenger arrive 90 minutes to two hours before their flights after airport officials tightened security at Honolulu Airport. Homeland Security officials raised the threat level to orange — or high alert — after British authorities thwarted a plot to use liquid explosives on U.S. bound airlines."

Well, crap! I bet MelissaHi is going to tell me to take the connection that arrives 2 hours prior also, just so she doesn't have to put up with me! Hey Melissa, you gonna send us the link to the newspaper photo with your boyfriend?

Now, if I miss the 3:17 from HNL to KOA, will Aloha charge me a big change fee to go on the 5:25 flight?

Seems as if I can check my bags all the way thru both ways, but who knows now. I'm going to give it my best to carry on only.........but I really need all those liquid potions for the lines and wrinkles on this face.

If I get stuck in Honolulu airport guess we will just have to go over to Stinger Ray's and have an extra shot for my dollar bill.

I agree with everyone else - your times are too close - you're putting a whole lot of faith in the on-time arrivals and not considering luggage at all from what it sounds. Also - my BF just flew from HNL to Chicago the other day and he was advised by the airline to be at the HNL airport THREE hours before the flight and it took over an hour to get through security. If it were me I'd give myself leeway - you sure don't want to miss a flight and deal with those consequences OR worry about it all the time either.

iceeu2 Aug 18th, 2006 10:27 AM

Thanks for the help guys. Given you are all in agreement, I won't chance the tight connections.

Wanted to ask you before I tossed this out to the real icee. At least, y'all didn't call me crazy and nuts. And, he probably wouldn't have said it, but that look......oh that look I would have gotten.

Mahalo all

For what it is worth, 2 years ago we flew Chicago to HNL then to Kauai. I had booked an inter-island flight that had 45-50 minutes between our arrival and departure. Without our knowledge Hawaiian Airlines moved us to the next flight because of the time allowance. I don't recall specifically whether it was due to the baggage issue or some other requirement. We flew United and they checked our bags all the way through to Kauia. Also, we have been in the HNL airport on previous trips, as the other poster mentioned, we did have some trouble getting over to the inter-island terminal. I was actually glad we had been moved to an later flight (only an hour later). It allowed us to catch our breaths.

Where's our billyboyfriend?

Samsaf Aug 18th, 2006 12:01 PM

Hi, iceeu2. If you're wanting to check your luggage all the way through to Kona, the airlines probably will not let you book flights that close together. I also agree that you need more time between flights.

Have fun!
Sherry
