Hawaii: Jeep or Convertible?
Message: Hello,
We are staying on Kauai for a week and then moving on to Maui and Oahu for our honeymoon. We currently have a Jeep Wrangler reserved on all three islands. I have heard that this might not be the best choice because it rains a lot and the tops are hard to get up. We rented a Jeep when we were in USVI's and couldn't imagine going up and down those hills without the Jeep. Do we need a Jeep, or would a convertible be a better idea. Help? Thanks. |
Have had both on Maui and the Jeep was interesting for about 5 minutes .. zip-up windows, noisy etc. Convertible wins hands down for us.

Why would you need a Jeep to go up and down hills (as long as you are on a paved road)?
|
Somebody posted a Hawaii trip report that I read yesterday and mentioned that the Jeep was a pain in the butt because it seemed to rain every 5 minutes and it was very difficult to put the cover on. They traded it in for a convertable. ((b))

We always rent a convertible and love it.

Agree with PSPERCY. We had a Jeep on Maui and it was a royal pain. Not very comfortable for the long trip to Hana and there was really nowhere secure to lock up our belongings, which meant we had to schlep everthing with us at every stop.

We had a jeep in Maui and loved it! No problems with sporadic rain showers though...not even on the road to Hana. On Kauai, we had reserved a convertible and once we got there we changed it to a jeep. It's not as smooth or luxuerious a ride as a convertible...but we didn't mind that, it was fun to bop along in our little jeep.
aloha! |
I always rent a standard mid size car buy I would like to try something a little more exotic.
I can understand the benefits of a convertible, but why rent a jeep if you are not going off road? |
CONVERTIBLE!!!! We just got back and had a convertible in Maui and a Jeep in Kauai-we traded that in less than a day to a convertible!
It was so much easier pushing a button to put the top up. It does rain on certain parts of the islands-we would have spent 1/2 our day getting out of the car an putting the top up on a jeep. We had NO problems w/ the car anywhere and we even went on the "forbidden" side on the Road to Hana! Convertible wins hands down for us! |
It depends on what you're going to do. We just returned from Kauai and did hiking off Forest Reserve roads that we wouldn't have made it down without the jeep - also allowed us to park in the "aux" lot at Kee Beach.
