Hawaii in July/Aug
 

Thinking of travelling to Maui or Kauai in July or August. For this time of year, does anyone have advice on the following:
-temperature(too hot?)
-crowds (is busier this time of year?)
-hurricanes (do we need to be concerned?)

It actually never gets "too hot" in hawaii. Typically, daily HIGH temps will be in the high 80s.

OldTrout, "too hot" is a very subjective term. A place is never too hot for my husband, and I'm the complete opposite. It can feel extremely hot and humid in Hawaii from about July through October, especially if the tradewinds die down, and you're on the dryer, hotter parts of the islands. I've been there in late July and in early October, and sweltered but I would still do it again! :p Summer is very busy, but that's to be expected. I wouldn't worry about hurricanes ... not likely, and you get warnings.

If I went in July/August, I'd stay on or near the water, on the cooler, wetter parts of the islands ... the North Shore of Kauai, or the Kapalua - Napili area of Maui. Just my two cents ...

My favorite time of year in Hawaii is April-May, but I'll go anytime!

I've been to Kauai in late August. IMO, it was hot b/c of the humidity. Our condo in Princeville was very warm due to its location. Thankfully, we had a/c in the bedrooms. The family next door had no a/c, and according to them, their condo was "miserable."

Now having said that, I didn't have any problems w/ the heat outdoors, but my mom found it uncomfortable.

The highest visitor months are July and August because children are out of school.

The temperatures will only be hot if the trade winds stop. That's called a "Kona" condition, as it emanates from the south. That happens about 10% of the time.

If you come the third or (better yet) fourth week of August, things will have started to slow down, and prices will (hopefully) be a little better.

While hurricane season is 6/1-11/30, the dangerous ones typically come our way later in the season.

We have gone the last 4 summers to Hawaii in August, and have had excellent and perfect weather each year. We've stayed for 2 weeks each time and been to all 4 of the main islands. It's always in the 80's. The crowds depend on which island/hotel/area you are staying in/on.

I agree with beachgirl. We usually go in July/August and love the warmer days and nights. We were in Maui in Febraury last year and it wasn't quite warm enough for us (reached only 80 in the day and fell to a chilly 68 at night! Brrr...)

The island we frequent is kept relatively less crowded by fears of rain, roosters and gigantic flying bugs that carry off children.

Well, we're thinking of staying in the Ka'anapali area in Maui...is this a good location? For us, we want to do a bit of everything...snorkel, snorkel tour to molokini, shop, beach, good restaurants, etc. Any recommendations? Oh, and a nice Hotel with AC around 3.5 to 4 stars.

As others have mentioned:

July\August are busy because they are the US summer vacation months.
Don't expect too many good deals on airfare or hotels.

Ka'anapali is tourist central. I don't know if that is a good or bad thing. All the hotels there will have A/C. I prefer the hotels in the Wailea/Makena area.

Summer can be hot if the trades disappear, but usually the highs are low-mid 80s. It's Hawaii--expect some humidity. The crowds go where crowds like to go, where there is shopping, and restaurants and lots of tourist infrastructure (Waikiki, the dry side of Maui, the Kona side of the Big Island). If you don't like crowds, try the Hilo side of the BI; it's not very touristy, but it is wonderful. No beaches, though. I've been to Kauai twice in August, and we've spent days on north shore beaches that were deserted except for us. Maybe two other people 100' away. This is high season on Kauai. The weather in the summer is usually glorious. It rains a little every day.
