oh oh. oh dear, mari. so sorry.
hopefully symptoms have abated and you're back in the swing of things. never had a problem w/#1 at kaheka but i buy at noon, on weekdays. hmm. i hope it wasn't the idea of ruminating.
melissa, have fun in lv and please do some loco moco research so we can keep this thread on message.
coincidentally, i'm also at my full first and last name @yahoo.com . let's get together and talk locos soon. (sung to c&k)
we should do a locals in lv thread next. who knows who we'll rope in that way.
mari, please tell me it wasn't at kaheka --- so sorry.

Maybe Melissa will try the Las Vegas version of loco moco while she's here. On the 2nd floor of the California Hotel there's a great little restaurant that serves Hawaiian food, and loco moco is on their breakfast menu, along with portugese sausage and eggs and many other yummy local foods. "Aloha Specialties" is the best - every time I need a "fix" of local food, that's where I go. The food is great and the prices can't be beat.

thnx for the sympathies. actual agony was pretty short-lived. since nobody else had a problem, i figured salmon roe was too rich for my humble system.
yup, it was KAHEKA. kalena, will take ur advice and save my next pilgrimage for a weekday.
what an end to the salmon moco tangent!
does the natto moco live???

I don't want anyone to think that I would post a question just to keep this thread at the front of the line, but...
do we have any report about the Loco Moco at the Farmer's Market at KCC?
I cannot imagine that all you kama'aina foodie-foodies did not go!

Speaking of food not agreeing...I finally arrived for my return dream trip to Honolulu on Monday and couldn't wait to hit the road to the North shore. I had a lunch plate of orange chicken, fried rice and pepper chicken at the L&L drive-in in Laie. Oy. Never again.
I then went to the U-Choice next to Daie on Kaheka to get the Lup Chuong Bao I've been thinking about for 20 years. The sausages sure did get skinnier.
Sigh. Time to make new happy food memories and quit relying on the old ones

So: Swan, Melissa, Lcuy, Mari, Pake, and whoeverelse's paying attention to our crazy loco moco thread.
Swan's still here! How about a loco moco gtg before Swan leaves? That might be my main meal of the week, and Swan, you could just order coffee or a salad, our treat! It would be fun to extend our fodors kamaaina hospitality.
So Mari, and Pake, where IS the definitive version of the loco moco? Did we ever reach consensus? Would King's this Saturday or Sunday morning do? Will you still be in Hawaii, Swan? And Kal, we'll do this for you and Mrs., should you ever choose to stop in the city.
Aloha, k

Nuts, I have a packed schedule for my remaining three days here. Wish I could come. Besides which, I still have a sensitive tummy. Yesterday I went with a friend to Patty's at Windward Mall and had a plate lunch with garlic chicken and duck, which was not all it was "quacked up" to be (try to keep the groans to a minimum, please).
Happily, I went to Zippy's today and had a teriyaki pork sandwich which was wonderful, followed by a piece of haupia cake that was amazing. But tonight I'm copping out and doing the prime rib buffet thing at the hotel
Have a great time, you guys. I have re-fallen in love with Hawaii and will be back a lot. Hope to catch the next loco moco convention.

So... pursuant to my conversation with Kalena, this whole event turned on Swan's availability as guest of honor. As that is not in the cards, we are postponing the taste test until certain individuals' gastronomic systems are in order and ... Kal coming into town.
Any objections?

No objections. Swan, have a great time during your remaining few days here, we'll just have to do this some other time! Hope everyone's feeling better. This is one friday night I'm content to nest at home. Must be the humidity, oof!

melissa, u sound like elmer fudd too? i am comforted.
i've discovered that icy foods/drinks dull the pain of swallowing.
swan, i truly admire ur food itinerary: l&l, u-choice-inn, patty's, zippy's. if i ever get to atlanta i'm coming to u for suggestions.

Mari, in Atlanta I'm strictly a fast-food girl--Wendy's, Burger King and Arby's. (I hate McDonald's--I do have some pride, after all.) I do love a down-home southern feast once in a while of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, squash casserole, fresh green beans, home-made biscuits the size of a small skyscraper smeared with fresh butter, and warm peach cobbler.
My time in Honolulu may be more limited than I thought. I have a very bad knee that has been getting more and more painful, and this morning it's completely on strike. If it's not much better in a couple of hours, I might be heading home today. At least I get to watch the ocean from my lanai.
It's been fun. I'm gonna get this knee fixed once and for all and come back to visit my loco moco buddies for real.
I hope everyone gets better. Sounds like a few people might need flu shots

Actually, mari, I'm speaking OK--I have one at the back of my mouth but not on my tongue; one on the side of my tongue in an out-of-the-way spot; and one on my lip. My friend thinks it's an outbreak due to stress! I'm sipping icy drinks, no rice for me!!
