Hawaii concerns for Oct/Nov travel
 

I have tried different searches through the forum, and I can't quite seem to find the answers I'm looking for. I went to Hawaii almost 3 years ago with a buddy of mine about 2 weeks before I started dating the lady that would become my wife. Very bad timing - definitely would have preferred to go with my wife. :)

We went August 30-Sept. 10. My wife and I have been blessed to be able to have a trip to Hawaii the end of October until Nov. 2 this year. I would like to know how different the climate will be compared to my previous trip. We were on Oahu and Maui. We stayed on the beach near Chinaman's Hat and loved that area of the island. Snorkeling at Haunauma Bay (sp?) was a blast. We also enjoyed the calm, beautiful waters of Lanikai Beach.

Will conditions be similar at the end of Oct into Nov? Or will all the surf be higher everywhere? (not sure how that works) We are planning to stay in the same area because she wants to see North Shore as well as other things on Oahu like Pearl Harbor, etc. Hopefully, someday we'll have more trips to explore the other islands.

Surf starts picking up around November 1.

Rainy season starts around mid-October. But all that means is that it may rain more. But the rain is mostly in the mountains & in the mornings. Don't worry about it.

Temperature will be similar to September. Maybe a couple of degrees lower. Highs 82-88. Low's 72-75

We were on the Big Island Oct 22 through Nov 2 of 2006, and we had beautiful weather. (Of course, there was also the earthquake that hit the week before we arrived, but that's another story!)

When we flew to Honolulu from the Big Island to change planes, it was raining in Honolulu.

The surf wasn't big on the Kohala Coast while we were there.

Will the water around Lanikai be similar - or does their surf pick up around then, too?

Is snorkeling still feasible at that time of year, or will it be too rough generally?

We snorkeled at several places on the Big Island and had no problems. (I only snorkel when it's very calm, because I'm not the greatest swimmer.)

We have 8 nights - flying out the 9th evening. Our plan is to spend 6 nights on Oahu and 2 nights on Maui - here's why...

Planning to settle in around Kaaawa area - easy access to a lot of areas where we can just "settle in" for relaxation and beach hopping.

I would like to go to Maui for the Road to Hana which I've done before, but my wife hasn't. I also enjoy the Lahaina area, and I think she'll like going there for shopping, etc. I did not enjoy Maui on my previous trip except for these parts, so I would like to tie these into this trip.

Would you suggest something different?

What part of Maui didn't you enjoy?

My favorite islands are Kauai and the Big Island, I think (but that changes sometimes!)

I would stay in Maui at least 3 nights, and Oahu 5 nights, but I've only spent about 3 nights on Oahu, so I don't know as much about that island.

Samsaf - we enjoyed the beaches on Oahu better than the ones on Maui. And we thought the scenery was better on Oahu, except for the Road to Hana. I absolutely love the long hike to Waimoku Falls through the bamboo forest, and my wife really wants to see that. That's almost the only reason for going to Maui. And I enjoyed the "strip" in Lahaina - shops, restaurants...especially at night.

dusty - thanks so much for your posts. You gave me a lot of info on my first trip to Hawaii 3 years ago, and it was priceless info.
