Have you been to ICE at Gaylord Texan? Info please

Taking Hubby and 2-yr old daughter for an quick overnight stay at the Gaylord the Wednesday before Christmas. Little surprise for hubby. If we stay a 2nd night it will be his decision once we get there since I will not tell him about this trip. Baby and I will just wake up and announce that he has been kidnapped for the next 36 hours & take off. (We'll be driving from Austin.)

With that said, I will plan this assuming that we will only stay one night. I want to go to the ICE exhibit/display. We will also want to go to the Sports Bar that evening to watch the Dallas Stars game. Of course there is other sight-seeing to do at the resort. We don't necessarily need to get out and explore Grapevine since we are from the DFW area and can do that any other time.

How long should we plan on spending at ICE? I am debating about buying tickets for the day that we arrive but maybe the next day would be better. We could check-out then go to it. Do you know if you can come and go throughout the day? I saw something online called a flex pass but no explanation. I know I can call the hotel but I would rather know about the experience from people who have experienced it & get your reviews. Thanks for any help you can provide about ICE or the resort itself.

I just saw a recent trip report on the ICE exhibit. I am trying to remember the title of the post. The poster said to definitely bring warm layered clothes because the temp inside is 9 degrees.

Parkas are provided for everyone (even the baby) with the cost of admission to the ICE show. You'll need no more than 1.5 hours total for the ICE show.

The sports bar at the Texan is GREAT! I don't know how family-friendly it will be for a 2-year old, though...

Hello diart. First of all, thanks to ilovetulips for providing the link to my report on ICE. This is a unique experience and I highly recommend it.

The exhibit is very impressive but not huge, around 17,000 square feet. The temp inside the exhibit is 9°F, so I cannot stress to you enough the need for warm gloves, thick socks and boots.

I see no reason to buy your tix in advance, just buy them when you are ready to go in. You can linger at the exhibit as long as you want, but I don't think we stayed for more than an hour because 9° is REALLY cold. I don't know if you can come and go into ICE throughout the day, but I doubt you would need to, as you can see it all in an hour or so.

If you have any other questions please post back and I will try to answer.

Thanks for the good info. It sounds great. I am glad to hear we will not spend too much time at the exhibit. When I looked online to see about buying ticket some tickets were not available at certain times during the day (for instance 12:30 pm and 2:30 were sold out). When I made room reservations the agent said if they were sold out they would just sell tix for the next time they were available (I thought she meant the next DAY they were available!). I did not know they were sold by the time until I went online and went through the steps as if I were going to buy.

Ooops. I hit post by accident. I think the Sports bar will be okay for Cecily. It will be on a weeknight. She is used to us going to sports events and watching sports at home. We can just go back to our room if it turns out not to be a good idea. (She'll probably hate sports when she grows up -- or worse yet, will choose the wrong teams!! LOL ----sort of!!! )
