We recently stayed 6 nights at Honua Kai in Maui. The resort is gorgeous, lots of pools there, no worries about fighting for a chair. Some of the lounge chairs are in the water which was nice. The rooms are beautiful, we had a 2 bedroom unit, the staff is very friendly and we were close to all of the action in Kaanapali (glad we didn't stay in that area) and Lahaina. Kapalua is also close by, a beautiful area of Maui with very scenic beaches. Enjoy your time on the islands! ***kim***

Mauii and Kauii are the best 2 islands in our opinion. In Sept you shouldn't have problem with crowds. Both are far more scenic than the islands you have visited, which is why they are more developed in the first place. You might want to think in terms of renting a condo rather than a hotel in order to save money. VRBO or rental agents can surely find you a place to stay that is affordable. The experience of the island should be your primary driver.

Go to Maui. Forget a hotel. Get a low-rise 2br condo. Avoid Kaanapali. Stay in Kahana or Napili. Of course, I've only been to Maui about 20 times. We're going back to Kauai next year just because we haven't been there in a while. Maui no ko oi!
