Has anyone travelled recently with 18 month infant on flights over 10 hours and if so, did you purchase seat? If not, how did you manage?

While it's true that there are many more car accidents than there are plane accidents - it doesn;t require an accident to injure a small child.

Even moderate turbulence - which happens fairly often - can be enough for a parent not to be able to hang onto a child - and one not strapped into a seat has NO protection. The child can end up simply bounding around the cabin - with serious injuries perfectly possible. (Even adults who are not belted into their seats on a turbulent flight can end up with broken bones - you just can;t hold yourself in your seat.)

When our children were little, they wouldn't ALLOW car seats on airplanes. I wished then that they did -- long airplane trips in coach are hard enough without having a baby in your lap or a child crawling all over you. At least with a seat, the child can put the tray down and color, or watch a dvd, while you read a book or stretch your legs, even if it is in spurts.

Thank you Fodorites. Sorry for the delay in posting a reply but my computer was down. We have already purchased and paid for ticket for infant. All of the advice was well appreciated. Thanks again for taking the time and sharing your views.
