Has anyone stayed at the Clift Hotel in S.F. since its makeover?
 

Was wondering if anyone had stayed at the Clift Hotel in San Francisco since its recent renovation?

Betty, unfortunately, the lovely old Clift Hotel has been taken over by Ian Schrager who has questionable hiring practices, i.e. no people of color. Visitors to the hotel's restaurant and bar are generally expected to fit his idea of young, hip and trendy (and white). If you don't fit that description you might not feel comfortable as a hotel guest. The place is dripping with attitude.

We had a horrid stay there. The new decor is in poor taste: the furniture included plexiglass cube night tables and neon orange trimmed bath shelves. The room was so small my husband and I could not pass each other. There are definitely many, many better choices in the same price range in SF.

I have not stayed there, but I have to agree with "dripping with attitude" remark. We tried to go by for a drink back in September. We were too early by a few minutes, which they could simply have told us. But no, they had to make sure that we knew that while there was no way they would serve us now, in 30 minutes it would be so crowded that we couldn't hope to get in! Definitely cooler than thou.

Anyone else have any comments on the Clift. American Express is running a special for this hotel. It sounds different the way they describe it.

Topping. hey Josh - these are the negative remarks I recalled having seen here. I'm not startled that the rooms may be tiny and sacrifice function for form but was a bit surpised by the comments on his supposed hiring practices. Such exclusive "whiteness" does not appear to be the rule at the Paramount and the Hudson, the two NYC properties I've been to. Just an observation - perhaps I missed something.

I also was not very impressed by the "new" clift. If your going to spend the money, you have much better alternatives in s.f.

White is right. I don't understand why it is required that employers hire people "of color". It should be based on skills and merit, not a quota.
