Has ANYONE been to Hawthorne Nevada????

Supposed to go early Sept. to a college reunion and I have lost contact with many graduates..I feel odd, maybe even rude, asking if there is A/C at the gathering place.(I am one of these people that starts to melt at about 80 degrees) As I remember the hostess has had some financial problems and had to move to Hawthorne because her parents gave her a house-but it " needed a lot of work"
She happened to mention the only motel in town was a"dump"
Maybe I shoud just "suck it up" take my portable fan and quit worrying.
need opinions...

Hawthorne is a gasoline stop in the desert on the way to/from Reno. There is a McDonald's and an Army base there. What there is of the town exists to support the Army Base.

I would not be happy if I had to stay there. If the reunion activities are during the day, you might consider basing your trip in Reno. It's about a 2 hour drive each way to Hawthorne from Reno.

And yes, in early September, it will be hot there.

One of my classmates has saved the day..She lives in Reno and will drive 6 of us to Hawthorne in her BIG motorhome. I know RV leave big "carbon footprints" (about 10 mile MPG) but with six of us it won't be so bad...As for hot weather concerns--I'll just take my fan and hope for a "cool" spell.
Thanks for info..

Drove through there once on the way to...somewhere.

Why, why, why would anyone make you have a college reunion in Hawthorne? Why? Really, it's a dump.

At least move it to Lake Tahoe or even Mammoth Lakes or something. There is nothing except a gas station in Hawthorne and you will need AC in September.

According to AAA guide book, the El Capitan Resort & Casino is a 2 diamond place so they must have AC. Strange place. The Army base is a huge ammo depot with all sorts of bombs & missiles in storage.
