Has anyone been to Corolla, North Carolina?

Just where is this place? Saw a newspaper article. Now can't find it. What do you know?

It's in the Outer Banks just south of the Virginia border, just north of Duck, N.C. From what I hear, it's a great beach town. All houses. Very family oriented. Very relaxing.

Corolla is at the extreme upper end of the Outer Banks. There's a great lighthouse, some gift type shops, a surf shop, a grocery store, several nice restaurants, and lots of great houses to rent. It's removed from the tourist hubbub in Kitty Hawk et al, and yet that area is easily drivable for a few hours of that kind of stuff. I would consider Corolla, as the previous poster said, for a "get away from it all" type vacation. This is not Dizzy World !!!!

I know this is a little late, but I just spent my first outer banks vacation on labor day weekend. This is the most relaxing vacation that I have ever had. The homes are exquisite and wonderfully outfitted. The area is pretty quiet at this time of the year. We rented through Sun Realty and they have a website. I'm sure they will send you a catalog if you request it.

Unless you have a North Carolina map, you won't find Corolla. Even then, it may not show up. It's north of the northernmost bridge to OBX, and north of where the map probably shows the road stopping. The other posters are right about what you'll find. It's GREAT! Here is a web site that lists websites for realtors up and down the OuterBanks.

http://www.aesir.com/OuterBanks/LodgingList.html

One of my most vivid memories: We were sitting on the deck of the oceanfront house about 1/4 mile south of where the paved road stops. We saw one of the wild horses charge some people walking south on the beach. He literally ran up to them and started bucking right in front of them. I was trying to take a picture of this with my zoom lens. Suddenly I realized why the stallion was behaving this way. Through the aid of the lens I saw, tucked between a pair of small dunes just off the water, a mare and her foal. The stallion was warning the people to stay away from his family! By the way, it's illegal to pet, feed, or otherwise interact with the wild horses.

I went to Corolla (pronounced "Crawlah") twenty years ago, and it was open, rustic, quiet, full of nature. Last year I went back and found mile after mile of gigantic neo-palaces for rent -- the kind that have a whirlpool, 5 bedrooms, and rent for $2500/week. The horses have been pushed up toward Virginia, and while it isn't WDW or even as bad as Nags Head/Duck, there are the cutesy stores and restaurants now. I'd still take it over Virginia Beach, but know that it isn't all that quaint any more.

friends of mine own a house on the beach there. it's quite nice - and relazing, and peaceful... (I can't compare it to 20 years ago, though, alas!)

Hi! We are from Central Virginia and many of us from this area go to Corolla at least once a year. You can either rent a home or condo. Many different companies rent, but the big ones in Corolla are B&B, R&R, Twiddy, Joe Lamb, Sand&Sea. You can get some great deal off seaon (i.e. we usually rent for 1/5 in-season rate) until May. Have fun!

Friends rented a beach house there last summer, had a great time!

The official tourist website for the area is http://www.outerbanks.org/
Its a good place to start. In general, Corolla is an upscale, cottage development. Very nice. Uncommercial except for the real estate companies, maybe 1 big grocery store, a few restaurants.
