I haven't actually stayed there but only nearby in Shepherdstown, WV. Climb up the hill by the old church for great views, walk out on the railway trestle for more views, visit the John Brown museum, go in the firehouse where John Brown and gang held up during the famous raid, and see the history museum near the entrance to the historic area (can't remember the name of it). There are lots of other restored buildings for a quick walk through. Try to visit nearby Antietam Battlefield if you have time. You can reach it in well under an hour. Only Gettysburg surpasses it in this part of the country, but Antietam is even better preserved.

About five years ago we stayed at the Bavarian Inn (www.bavarianinnwv.com) in Shepherdstown and enjoyed it. The restaurant was good as well. The Inn is about 10 miles from Harpers Ferry.
Another good restaurant there (at least it was good five years ago) was the Yellow Brick Bank.
There are plenty of motels around as well.

We've been to HF 2x and both times we stayed at the Comfort Inn.
Nice location. We were there for a bike ride down the C&O Canal to DC.
Short bike ride downhill into the back entrance to HF. Absolutely beautiful especially at about 6:00a.m.

Typical Comfort Inn. Nice people. Cont B'fast. Near some local restaurants.

I could retire in the area.
If you're active, rent some bikes and take a short treck up/down the C&O Canal.
The only hard part is lugging your bikes up over the bridge.
Good luck and Happy Trails.

Hey Kal...we must think alike! We also stayed at the Comfort inn In HF. Very clean and close in, my only complaint was they stopped braekfast 15 minutes before the announced end, and my kids had to beg!!
We had a great dinner in a roadhouse type place up the hill from there. I wish I could remember the name...It's right on the main road and had neon signs and a big parking lot. It was the only thing open that night (was it late, or maybe sunday night???) and the food was surprisingly good.
We also like the fact that you can do a little walk on the appalachian trial there. We can say we hiked it...but without really having to "hike".
We really enjoyed this town...it was the least crowded park, so you could really enjoy it and get the senso of what happened here. Don't miss the ranger talks.
