Harper's Ferry from DC?
 

Is it possible to get to Harper's Ferry from DC without having a car? Is there any type of public transportation that goes there? Thank you.

Do you know how to google? You've now asked three questions on this board that you could have learned the answer to in less than one minute each by yourself.

If you're not going to drive, get familiar with the WMATA map and the regional trains.

If MARC doesn't fit your schedule, the Amtrak Capitol Limited leaves Union station at 4:05PM every day.
The fare to Harper's Ferry is $13 or if you buy far enough ahead you can get the coach seat for $10 (saver).

If you aren't interested in helping then why even reply. Yes I can google. I haven't asked "what do I do in DC?" that many people ask. I narrowed my hotels down to 2 for a question. I don't know anything about getting around with public transportation. I live in rural Oklahoma and everyone has a truck! So I asked a simple question as I had no idea if there was public transportation that would go to Harper's Ferry - or Arlington or Mount Vernon, where I found out I can go by boat - never would have thought that! I'll try to figure out this MARC, which I didn't know about. Leaving at 4:05 pm on Amtrak would not work as we wanted to go out that morning and return that afternoon. Thank you to those who really have helped. To the ones who have a nasty reply - you don't know me - kindness is a better option.

MARC is a commuter train which runs in-bound in mornings, and out-bound in evenings catering to workers going into Washington, D.C.

The Amtrak schedule is 4:05 in afternoon as you found, so that leaves you few options unless you stay overnight. But then the return train is 11:25 in the morning, which again, gives you no time.

Bus, well, you will find the same situation as the train if there is any bus service to and from D.C., it would be heading into that area in the evening, leaving you stranded.

If your motivation to go to Harpers Ferry is because you are interested in American Civil War history, then there may be a tour group that caters to ACW enthusiasts.

In the end, you may be forced to hire a car and drive yourself, or look at hiring a private car/driver service or cab.

While I don't deny Harpers Ferry is a beautiful place, it is rather small, has a historical link that is somewhat of a blip in the big scheme of things (in my opinion), and you will have seen/done it all within an hour to two tops after getting there. So you may need to weigh your desire to go there vs. the amount of effort (and money) it will take you to get there.

The short answer is no. Harper's Ferry isn't reachable by public transit. And it's pretty far (almost 70 miles), so it's not as if you could easily do this as a day-trip even if you could find good times for trains. It would be an easy drive, however. Though if you want to see the C&O Canal I think there's a better place at Great Falls, but the overlook there is closed until June and I can't remember when you're going.

The answer for Arlington and Mount Vernon is a distinct yes. Have you thought about perhaps going to Annapolis?

One thing I'd recommend you get is the Uber app if you have a smartphone. Taxis in DC are difficult to find sometimes, and Uber works perfectly and is generally cheaper. You could, for example, probably take an Uber X from DC to Annapolis (which is also historic and easily walkable without a car) in the morning and a combo of bus and Metro back to DC in the afternoon for a fairly reasonable price.

I gave you the exact information you needed and did it quickly and if you can google, you could have found the information too. Thus my point.

Simply stated, you're whining when you should be thanking me considering you did not even know about MARC before my post. And considering your two other threads, you're patting yourself on the back pretty hard for picking out two hotels and not asking other basic questions that are easily researched.
