Harlem NYC
 

Would like to visit Harlem on this trip to NY. Ideas for food, activities? I tried the Apollo website but its not that helpful. Have heard about wonderful Sunday gospel brunches. I also saw several restraunts on the Food network a year or so ago, but now can't remember the recommendations! Thanks!

In Harlem, best is to go on a sunday :
or you take the subway to broadway/125th
street and you can go on 125th.street, very animated on sunday and eat at Sylvias, not so bad as the turistic guides says.
You can also hike from upper west side
from 72nd street/Bdway to 125th.street and so you'll see Columbia and St John the divine on the road...
After you have to take the bus to Morris
Jumel mansion and see Jumel Terrace and Jumel mansion and over all, go at 555 Edgecombe avenue : there is a jam jazz
session in an appartment, organised by Marjorie at 3rd floor appt 3E at 4 p.m.
2 to 3 hours of old fashioned jam jazz session "out of time"...
After you can take the subway at Broadway not so far from Marjorie's appt
NB : bus can let you at the entry of 555 Edgecombe avenue...
If you have time before, during the week, go to the museum of the city of New York, where there is an exposition "Lost and found architectural treasures in Harlem" on old bulidings in Harlem and so you can have some other ideas on what to see.

The main drags, Malcom X Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard have some very pretty brownstones. Check out the Schomburg Center for Black Culture.

We ate at Sylvia's Restaurant last year for dinner and it was really good. I think it is at 125th St. I would highly recommend it.

Hi: Nice to see a visitor to my home. Let's see. Make sure you pay a visit to the Schomburg Museum on 135th & Lenox(Malcom X Blvd) then head south and you can visit the Studio Museum of Harlem (featuring paintings/art) on 125 between Lenox(Malcom X) and Fifth Avenues.

You could do Sylvia's on 126th & Lenox(Malcom X) for lunch and then do Mo'Bays on 125th between Lenox & 7th(Adam Clayton Powell) for dinner. Just a couple of doors down is the Apollo Theatre. If your interested you can always continue down Lenox Avenue to 116th street and make a sharp left. You can check out the little Malcom Shabazz Mkt. and have a bite to eat at Amy Ruth's on 116th between Lenox & Seventh. There's so much more, I'd suggest you get a guide before coming or call the Harlem Tourism board. Good Luck.
