right back at you buckeyemom! Just looking for more than chocolate and flowers LOL!!!

themanfromnantucket Feb 14th, 2005 06:05 AM

Stupid, overrated holiday to do nothing more than give the economy a boost.

Hallmark holiday at it's best. All guys dread this day.

Patrick Feb 14th, 2005 06:08 AM

Yea, themanfromnantucket, but I bet you can't wait until April 1 -- that holiday was even named for you!

Thanks for your little ray of sunshine.

babs001 Feb 14th, 2005 06:25 AM

Patrick, you have such a way with words!!

Hope all of you out there have a wonderful day.

Happy Valetines Day everyone! :-X

Meesthare Feb 14th, 2005 08:39 AM

Thanks for the lovely wishes, and the same to all!
I remember when I was single and I thought Valentine's Day was overrated and stupid. One of my colleagues and I used to joke about having trouble getting in our front doors because of all the roses and chocolates piled up waiting for us. I feel very differently now, though - my sweetie does in fact bring me flowers and chocolates (and not just on Valentine's Day) and tonight he's taking me out for dinner. I've just finished baking him some Valentine cookies. A couple of years ago he sang me a Brahms love song, completely unexpectedly, during a choir rehearsal (he had set it up with the conductor). With somebody that romantic in my life it's awfully hard to be cynical.

dcespedes Feb 14th, 2005 10:22 AM

Meesthare, that is so incredibly sweet! ((l))

themanfromnantucket Feb 14th, 2005 10:33 AM

See that meesthere, it is husbands like yours that make the rest of us hate this holiday. You come into work telling the story how he SINGS to you, and the rest of us need to measure up to that. 99% of men would love to get together and set the paramaters of just a card and maybe flowers. Most restaurants charge too mush on this day anyway, so dinner is a ripoff also.

cd Feb 14th, 2005 10:39 AM

the man
It doesn't take much to make a woman happy. I woke up this morning to a beautiful card on the dining room table. I was touched. Just a card, nothing else but a meaningful card chosen with love.

themanfromnantucket Feb 14th, 2005 10:42 AM

'Tis my point. The simple gifts are the best. It does not need to be filled with chocolate, flowers etc.

Well, maybe for a select few who need it.

iceeu2 Feb 14th, 2005 10:49 AM

**smooches**...wonder what muffin is getting for Valentine's Day...We went to the theatre yesterday...and I swear I saw muffin.....leather and all that goes with it!

ElendilPickle Feb 14th, 2005 12:50 PM

Thank you, Buckeyemom!

We enjoyed our church's annual Valentine banquet Saturday night, and dh just IMed me a bit ago and said he's bringing dinner home - sounds like my evening is looking up! ;-)

It's Valentines day
and Fodors is orange like sunset on the bay.
Here's hoping that your sweetie
gives you a really hot .......

Use your imagination!

Patrick Feb 14th, 2005 01:07 PM

If I were Muffin's Valentine, I'd give her a new robe. A big white one with real long sleeves that I could wrap around behind her and tie together. Get the picture?

tpatricco Feb 14th, 2005 01:21 PM

ROTFLOL Patrick!

Nantucket, maybe you are with the wrong woman. You should not have to measure up to anybody else. If your partner knows and loves you and you make a nice gesture to show her you love her on this day it will be appreciated.

Most practical women know that buying flowers today is rediculous. Unless you have crazy money, buy them another day...make an effort to do something considerate, cook dinner yourself or bring home dinner and set the table with nice dishes...light some candles.

Really guys, it's not that hard to impress us.

themanfromnantucket Feb 14th, 2005 01:29 PM

Are you kidding? I am with the right woman because she knows that flowers and chocolate is a bunch of crap. My valentine was the most simple thing in the world and she could not have loved it anymore.

That doesn't change the fact that this is a stupid holiday to boost the economy during the winter months.

buttercup Feb 14th, 2005 01:35 PM

I need something to boost ME this time of year. This is when it starts to feel that winter will never end. I love Valentine's Day, just for something different.

My kids are now excited about it. Remember decorating the box, writing your name on 20 cards? Last night, my daughter was going through all the candy heart-like message suckers she was giving out to make sure she didn't give "kiss me" or "love you" to a boy. YUCK!!

PamSF Feb 14th, 2005 01:53 PM

Dear manfromnantucket~here's a suggestion. Celebrate Valentines Day by doing something nice for your community or a friend. Hallmark holiday ~yup, but you can't deny the world could use all the love it can get.
A local priest gave a sermon the Sunday before Lent suggesting rather than give something up, why not do something of service. I think it's a great idea.

LOVE BACK AT Y'ALL.

Kal Feb 14th, 2005 03:12 PM

..and a VERY Happy V'tines Day to my favorite
"Original Wine-O Gangstah Gals"; The Ps, Ms. Marilyn, BarbRoyale and Razzie ....>:D< :* :-X

And last but certainly NOT least, The Mother of ALL Valentine's Daze, Mrs Kal. :-d

Now I better get my immense royal Polish okeole back into the kitchen and start cookin'! ;)

themanfromnantucket Feb 14th, 2005 03:15 PM

I do nice things for my community all year, not just one day. The problem with holidays like this is we should be treating our loved ones like this everyday, not just once a year. Do we treat our mothers well on mothers day and then ignore them the rest of the year? I hope not. My wife gets the equal ,of a valentine everyday so we laugh at people who are rushing out to get "flowers", my wife gets flowers every week. Anyone else here do that? Anyone send a card on a tuesday in July for the hell of it?

My wife is my valentine24/7/365, not just on 2/14.

seetheworld Feb 14th, 2005 03:18 PM

Patrick, please never change...you are just too funny!

LTCM17 Feb 14th, 2005 05:18 PM

Scarlett Feb 14th, 2005 05:29 PM

Happy Valentines Day to you too!
The Yankee cooked for me tonight.
themanfromnantucket, you can do that too, no? It was lovely, better than a restaurant ~

razzledazzle Feb 14th, 2005 05:34 PM

Happy Valentine's Day to All!
I am about to seek out the kitchen
and cook up a mustard and herb encrusted pork loin for Mr.R5

He will be in shock, as the kitchen is not a place I am usually found, I will start with decanting a nice Pinot Noir
as that will make cooking a cheerier
event.

It will just be fun to see his surprise. Now, if we determine that
dinner should be fed to the cats
what is my back-up plan ?

Ah, yes.
Chinese take-out
:)

Happy V-day to all my friends in Fodor land! Going out tomorrow(should be blissfully uncrowded) because sister and fiance are flying in to FLL for visit with us.

Patrick Feb 14th, 2005 06:21 PM

Cooked a pair of Maine lobster tails, two small filets, did two twice baked potatoes, and some broccoli (why did I ever buy a 3 pound bag from Costco when there are only two of us?). Along with a nice Lindeman's reserve cabernet. Sitting on our screened balcony/porch while it is still 68 degrees.

jor Feb 14th, 2005 06:27 PM

Valentine's Day was made for fools and children. Happy February Fools Day to all the men out there who spent money to conform and the women who expect them to conform.

OneWanderingJew Feb 14th, 2005 08:47 PM

Happy Belated Valentines, Everyone ((L))

(Yum, Patrick! We want to double date w/you next time you make dinner!)

And Bah Humbug to all who can't just kick back and smile when Valentine's comes around. I used to be like that--a bunch of my friends and I went to a bar dressed all in black back in college...Turns out the guys loved it and I think we all ended up w/dates afterwards, so you never know.

starrsville Feb 15th, 2005 12:19 AM

I'd like to tag along to Patrick's next dinner. Can we make it a dinner party for 6?

furrychick Feb 15th, 2005 01:13 AM

I have mixed feelings about Valentines day. I think it is a day when companies exploit people into buying expensive meals/gifts and it puts pressure on poor un romantic men to do something romantic! Also I know my single friends find it depressing! What my fiance and I did this year was make each other cards. Not only did we have a lot of fun doing it, we knew that more thought had gone into it rather then just picking up the first card you see in the shops!

muffin Feb 16th, 2005 03:36 PM

Muffin got a new yoga outfit! Yay no chocolates to make me fat...please we don't need that now do we. **smooch**

iceeu2 Feb 17th, 2005 04:08 AM

muffin, aren't you even going to describe your new yoga outfit for us??? Is it the one Patrick wants you in??
