Happy St. Patrick's Day! 
Since this is a travel forum, I'll mention that I will be driving though Dublin today. The hills are a beautiful emerald green this time of the year!

Patrick, thanks for reminding me I forgot today was St. Patrick's day. You might have your own holiday based on your posts and replies. Both funny and informative. Well I'm off to Scarlett's neck of the woods on Saturday, but beating myself up for not going more south.

I'm actually wearing a green shirt only because we're going to a St. Patrick's Day party hosted by friends from our church, and I figure I should fit in.

Happy St. Patrick's Day and Happy Birthday to pdxgrl!
This day always brings back a funny memory for me. Our DD was in kindergarten and her class made green applesauce that day. Apparently on the way home from school on the bus, it did not sit well with her. When I met the bus, the driver motioned for me to come closer. Apparently our DD had gotten sick...everything was covered in green!

My maternal grandmother's family name was Patty. When my mom and I went to Ireland, she checked the phone book in every town we went to. No Patty's were ever found in the phone book in Ireland.
We finally decided that as the ancestors came through Ellis Island someone was creative and whatever the family name had been was now a new spelling of "Paddy".

Here's another "Happy St. Patrick's Day" to everyone from another of Irish born parents.
They both came from Co. Roscommon and ended up in California! After their divorce (opps!) my mom went back to Roscommon and has lived there ever since (30 years now). I'm going back to visit her next month.
I have always loved my Irish Heritage...
went to Ireland the first time when I was 16 and fell in love with it!! (and, all the cute Irish boys!) I was a step dancer back then and I would even listen on Sunday afternoons to an Irish radio program (that NO 16 year old would normally listen to!!ha!).
Anyway, yes, I'm wearing my green!
Oh yeah, it was my father's birthday so I think of him alot on this day (Love you daddy....Rip)of course his name was Patrick and I am Patricia after him.

A past poster said, " Paddy is the nickname for men named Padraic (or Padraig), which is Patrick in the Irish language." Patty is not. Thus that is what I was thinking of in my earlier post. St Patty and St Pat is incorrect whereas St Paddy would be a nickname for St Patrick.

I wrote to an Irish aunt once and enclosed a picture of me and my daughter on "St. Paddy's day."
She replied, "well, I never heard it referred to *that* way before..." I had forgotten "paddy" can be considered a derogatory term for Irish.

Happy St. Patrick's Day Everyone! I am half Irish, half Polish--somewhere in Maryland my oldest brother is playing bag pipes for a festive party but back at the ranch I am listening to O'Sullivan Meets O'Farrell, Volume One for which said brother wrote the liner notes 
Me thinks we'll be drinking a Guiness tonight--cheers!

Ah, Tandoori Girl, thanks. How did you know that's just what I wanted for St. Patrick's Day?
We always go to the English Pub here for St. Patrick's Day for Corned Beef and Cabbage and Guinness. But I waited too long, they are way overbooked, and it's pouring rain in Naples, so I'm cooking it in. But alas no Guinness on tap at Patrick's house!

Happy St. Pat's, Patrick, and to all! My mother (an O'Neal) makes corned beef and cabbage every St. Patrick's Day. Baton Rouge has a nice St. Pat's parade (on the weekend before) but I didn't go this year. I do have a string of magnificent St. Patrick's Day beads--green (of course!) beads with shamrocks and a life size plastic cabbage on the end! I cut quite a striking figure when I wear it, I can tell you! I think I'll have a Harp beer (Harp's my maiden name, but unfortunately, no relation to the brewery!) Guiness is a bit strong for me! (good in stew, tho)

Sure and with a handle like this you know I'll be wearin' the green...and as it happens, doing so in Manhattan this year. Further testimony to my already well established old farthood, I even broke down and bought a kelly green baseball cap embroidered with a lovely shamrock, from a street vendor (of course for 30% less than the original asking price.) Tonight it's off to see Kathleen Turner in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?", most likely followed by a wee dram or so in a neighborhood bar.
BTW, the local grumble has been about the prohibition of FDNY membes wearing green berets in the parade. Official statement is that it is important to maintain the integrity of the uniform; the involved FDNY members chose not to march but to stand on the sidelines and watch (in their green knit berets.)

My son dressed as a leprechaun for school (a public school at that) as they had a contest for "Best Leprechaun." Of course, he didn't mention the contest until bedtime last night, so it was a bit of a scramble to put something together. The kids all looked so cute.
We are not having corned beef and cabbage tonight as I can't stand the stuff (apologies to the Donnellys, Leahys and Burkes - my Irish ancestors!)
I do hope you enjoy yours, however, Patrick!
