Hang Glide Maui?
DH wants to do this....anyone out there who've done this trike ride?
Belle |
I've never been hang gliding.
But these sites may help: http://www.hangglidingmaui.com/ This is in Hana. HANG GLIDING MAUI P. O. Box 880339 Pukalani, HI 96788 (Island of Maui) Tel. (808) 572-6557 Experience the thrill of soaring over the beautiful Island of Maui. Offering both traditional tandem flights from the summit of Mt. Haleakala and powered hang gliding from Hana Airport. (a different note says they don't allow hang gliding from Haleakala any more) http://mauiactivitydirectory.com/subpage8.html http://www.tripadvisor.com/CommerceP...vlet=ShowTopic |
Thanks for trying, dusty, but we already had both the Maui and Oahu sites.
I don't know how the tripadvisor site is supposed to relate?? We've decided the Hana location rules that out (inconvenient), but may try to work something out on Oahu....anyone with experience? Belle |
I lOVED LOVED LOVED triking with Armon out of Hana airport. It was my second flight in a week. My first was with Gerry on Kauai....this summer he will have me in the driver seat doing takeoffs and landings!!! woooohoooo!!!! All I can say is if you see the pictures and the NEEEEED TO DO IT!!! Listen to your heart. I would call Gerry or his best friend Armon, who are very best friends and ask them who you should fly with in Oahu. These guys are both hangliding junkies that know there stuff! Safer than a helicopter or most any ultralight flying!!!! Can't wait for my real lessons in August!

I only posted the trip advisor note because of the positive message about the Hana hang gliding. It was just a hit from a hang gliding maui search.

Thank you both for your replies!
dusty: you are a wealth of info, and such a willing to help spirit! Gyppielou: I was beginning to think NO ONE on fodor's had this experience! I have an e-mail in to the Oahu co. to find out the weight limit. It's strange..DH is normally afraid of heights...ie. Grand Canyon, top of house, etc., yet he is fascinated by this trike! Belle. |
Definately call/email Gerry at BirdsinParadise.com.....it is a small knit community and he and Armon will put your husband in the best hands...when I saw the pictures I simply knew!!!!

OldSouthernBelle - I lived on Oahu in the 70s for five years when I was in the Navy and now again for the past 5+ years.
I'm retired now and have a lot of time to research things on my computer. I only wish PCs were around many years ago. I'm sure all of my trips would have been planned better and even more eventful than they were. I've also been able to see and do more things in the islands these past five years by researching things and reading this and other travel forums. So I probably get more out of the forum than I put in. |
Our experience with Gerry on Kauai is here: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34508517
LOVED it! So worth the money! love roxy |
roxy: Do you have the pics posted?
Mahalo! Belle. |
No, no pictures online, I'd have to scan them all into the computer, that's why I never did it. HOWEVER, this guy posted his: http://community.webshots.com/album/30875583EMKZVugYJv
That's pretty much what ours look like, and what yours will look like! love roxy |

Doing the powered hang gliding in Maui with Armin is awesome. My wife and I did it back in July 2002 and still think some of our most memorable Maui experiences and photos came from those flights.
Being up so high in the open air is pretty exhilirating. Every time we turned, I must have dug my knees so hard into Armin's ribs, I was surprised to hear him continue talking to me through his mike. My wife didn't find it nearly white-knuckling as I did, and her only complaint was that the smell from her jumpsuit or helmet was unpleasant and nauseating. So take a bottle of Fabreeze with you, just in case. I just wished I was able to fit in a 60-min lesson instead of the 30-min one, because I was just getting used to the whole experience and steering the glider before it was over. Anyways, Armin is a great instructor, and he also shares his many wonderful advice about Road to Hana sites, Maui, etc. |
bluefan:
I'm alittle concerned about the recent road work on the road to Hana..scheduled to go on thru August! Also, the one in Maui has a weight restriction that eliminates DH.:( The one in Oahu sounds negotiable, if the safety belt fits, you go! Still not sure it'll work out. Thanks! Belle. Belle. |
The traffic on Hana Highway is moving very well. The construction is in one location at mile marker 11. One lane is closed, but traffic is moving very well., regulated by a traffic light. You can expect a delay of between 5-10 minutes, that is all. Between June 21 and July 1 the road will be closed at MM1 from 11:30 -3 pm. This should be a non issue if you plan accordingly. You should be well beyond MM11 by 11:30.

Thanks for the happy posts from birds in paradise customers! This bolsters my thoughts of trying this. I have been fascinated by these trikes since first hearing of them..and like someone else mentioned, i'm usually quite afraid of precipices. I do like to challenge this, though. ; o )

That makes me feel better, here today! Belle
