Hanalei Bay Resort
 

Looking into staying there in one of the "hotel owned" rooms. The room's description:

Studio Standard w/Kitchen Mountain View


One sofa bed. Lanai with mountain view. Approximately 570 square feet. Fully equipped kitchen, dining table with room for four. VCR, video game console, dial-up Internet access, in-room safe. Rattan furnishings. Air conditioned.

Is the only "bed" in this room the sleeper sofa mentioned? I found that incredibly strange.

Are the rooms as awful as I've read or have they truly renovated the hotel owned rooms as I've also read?

I'm not expecting the Ritz or anything but I also don't want a disgusting room for 5 nights.

We stayed at the HBR in Oct 2003, we had a hotel room with no kitchen. I got the room on Priceline and was pleasantly surprised with the room we were assigned, I am always worried of getting the Priceline Room. The only drawback was the location of our room, we had to take a lot of stairs to get to our room. Other than that the room was nice. I would call the resort and ask about the bed situation, the staff was always very friendly.

I'm having a dilemma deciding between this place and the Radisson Kauai Beach Resort.

We will be there mid January and I am aware the weather can be iffy. The North Shore beauty really appeals to us but I'm concerned that the weather may hamper what we are able to see/do. It also seems like it is a bit out of the way for the rest of the island.

We are not HUGE beach goers but would like to do some snorkeling and sunbathing.

Can anyone give a recommendation as to which location may be better? If it matters, this is our first trip to Hawaii so we are starting from scratch.

Hanalei is a bit out of the way for the rest of Kauai, but it's a beautiful spot to spend some time--near Hanalei Bay there are a large cave, mountains with waterfalls, scenic rice paddies, and a natural pool with a waterslide (you might remember it from the film South Pacific). Nearby Lumahai Beach is lovely. We liked the Hanalei area very much and wished we had had more than a few days there.

We stayed at HBR a couple years ago in a Studio with kitchenette. We had an incredible =-O view overlooking Hanalei Bay and Bali Hai Mountain, but ended up switching our room to a 1 bedroom mountian view with full kitchen, because the "kitchenette" of our studio consisted only of a coffee pot and a microwave oven. The air conditioning worked well, and I believe the unit was a "lock off" in which a divider separates the studio from another unit.

We would stay there again if the price was right$) but probably only in a one bedroom or higher. :S-

We have not visited in January, but suspect better snorkeling and beach going conditions will probably be found near Poipu in southern Kaua`i, rather than up north or east.
