hana overnight(s)
greetings
we will be travelling to hana while on maui. we thought it best to stay overnight, maybe 2 nights and travel the environs beyond hana, do some hiking, exploring. has anyone stayed in hana, outside the resort places. i.e. the houses for rent, or a cottage? there will be 5 of us. thanks in advance for your help. or how about camping in that area for a night? |
Hi tropicalbreeze, I think that's a great idea...that's what we did when we visited Hana. We stayed in a beautiful house (www.hamoabay.com) but it only sleeps 4...Another poster here, Maggi, enjoyed her stay in Hamoa Beach House, which was huge. Here is the website, with other cottage accommodations as well. I think most have a two night minimum.
http://www.hanamauitravel.com/intro.html One more for you to try is Malamalama, they have had good recs on this site, and have a variety of configurations: http://www.hanahale.com/ If you do go, plan to eat out one night at Hana Maui Hotel, the food was so-so, but we caught the keiki hula show, on a Sunday night, and it was wonderful. Bring food to cook on the other night...not much dining here. Visit the Hasegawa General Store for more provisions. Aloha! |
Call Tom at Hana Accommodations. They have a fabulous little cluster of cottages across the street from Waioka pools. The Mana Kai unit has three bedrooms and sleeps 6.
http://www.hana-maui.com/accommodations.html We love Hana and would live there if my clients weren't all on the other side. But we like to spend as much as time in Hana as we can, whether it's a day trip or a long weekend. Anyone who tells you there nothing to do in Hana has never spent any time there. I try to tell visitors that there is much more beneath the surface, but I find that many people are underwhelmed when they hit Hana town and then they simply head back. My favorite beach on the island is Hamoa. Be sure to have lunch or breakfast at Tutu's. My husband craves their loco moco with chili water. Hasagawa's is fun to visit, but for supplies you want to shop at the Hana Ranch Market. They sell `Ulupalkua beef abd fresh upcountry produce. And if you like seafood, you might want to stop at Nagata Market in Pa`ia Town on your way to Hana and pick up some fresh `ahi or ono. When do you plan on visiting? There are many festivals and events that go in Hana, if you know when and where to look. |

love the screen name. I'll be going to maui sometime between June 11 and June 26th. What kind of activities might be goin on in that time frame? |
Ah, that would be the King Kamehameha Parade in Lahaina (June 19) and the Maui Film Festival (June 16 - 20). Nothing in Hana that I know of. You might want to check at the ballpark and at the rodeo grounds when you are in Hana town.

Last July we stayed two nights at the Bamboo Inn Villa at the Hana Hale Malamalama, which is at www.hanahale.com. It was a big house with several other buildings on the property, which is right on Hana Bay and covered in banana, coconut, and plumeria trees. We even had a resident white gecko in our kitchen!
Check out their website, there are several different sizes of accomodations there, and I think there's a large house that must accomodate a bunch of people. The owner was REALLY nice to us, and the place is very laid back, with daily tropical fruit breakfast at the open aired "lobby" overlooking their waterfall and fish pond every morning. I wrote about it here: http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34436140 Hana is wonderfully relaxing and quiet at night after a long day of tearing up the waterfalls! love roxy |
