Half Moon Bay for SFO?

Hi all,

In mid-April I'll be finishing a two-week trip to California with a drive from LA back to San Francisco Airport.

I've got a 10.00am check-in at SFO, and am therefore looking for somewhere to stay for my last night within a very short drive (i.e. less than 1 hour) of the airport. I really hate hotel airports - utterly soulless and depressing - so want somewhere where I will still actually feel as though I'm on holiday!

Looking at my map of California, the town of Half Moon Bay seems an ideal option, but all the hotels I've found seem a little expensive.

So, does anyone know what kind of place Half Moon Bay is? Are there any other possibilities for me?

Any suggestiosn would be gratefully received.

Cheers all,
Dave

Main St HMB is a very cute 4 or 5 block strip. We go there quite often - just there yesterday. San Benito House is in the middle of this strip, and there are other motels & hotels on Hwy 1. I've never stayed at any hotel there, since I live only 25 mins away. Some nice restaurants also. Plan on about 45 mins to the airport.

I don't know the prices for your dates or if a bed & breakfast is what you are looking for, but we absolutely loved the Mill Rose Inn. Here's the link:

Hi. I love the Harbor House in Princeton-by-the-Sea, which is a little bitty harbor fishing town just north of Half Moon Bay. Right on the water, get a room upstairs for a really peaceful view of the harbor. You can walk to dinner at Mezza Luna, a gracious and handsome family-owned Italian restaurant, or go have boutique beers at the local brewpub. However, if you are doing this on a weekday you might want to think twice simply because the commute back to the bay side can be bad in the morning. So the goal of taking less than an hour might be at risk.

So here is another idea. Stay in Palo Alto. Do you know the place? It is a university town, for Stanford, and has an upscale main street - University - with nice hotels in walking distance. Try the Garden Court, on Cowper. They you would walk out on the street, have dinner, even go to a place called Watercourse Way that is a hot tub, massage, spa place that still keeps the original Bay Area slightly hippie feel - but now, of course, upscaleOr the STanford Park. Not walking distance to the main street, but has an outdoor pool if we happen to be having good weather and a really surprisingly good bar/restaurant. Free wireless internet too!

This is my home neighborhood and has been for most of my 50 years. Not to say that my taste will be yours, but I promise I have done some exploring...

Hi guarro, Half Moon Bay is my very favorite place, and you could have a beautiful last CA night! How early could you arrive? and what day? Hwy 92 isn't bad early or late but during the work day hours it can be in first gear slow. Pillar Point Inn is a great location if you would like to enjoy the harbor, and walk to great food and drink. The Beach House is fabulous to be on the water. There are many places to stay for different $-$$$$$, in town on near the water. What would you enjoy doing your last day and night? Check out Jeff Clarks Surf Shop and the Mavericks Big Wave local history. The March 2, 2005 Contest will be aired on NBC April 24 at 1pm! Happy to offer help if you have more clues what you would enjoy. Our Half Moon Bay is heaven, wish you had more time!
