Halekulani vs Royal Hawaiian

We would like to splurge a night in Honolulu in transit to the Big Island. I would appreciate Fodorites opinions on either of these. We stayed in the RH several years ago, and found it charming. I have heard so much about the Halekulani....please provide any input. Are either really worth the $$$$ ????? OR>>>is there a boutique hotel that I may need to take a look at??? Mahalo

We have not stayed at the RH- but have walked around the grounds and hotel. While it is charming and I love the historic atmosphere - We really enjoyed the Halekulani for it's more modern amenities. The "H" grounds are so serene and quite that you completely forget that you are in the middle of a large city. We loved every minute at the "H". We spurged on an ocean veiw room - but I think if we went again I would get a garden veiw room. The grounds are lovely to look at and that would save some $$. Have fun.
