haleakala temperature
 

We want to go hiking the Haleakala crater. Not doing the sunrise because we have kids. We want to be there around 9 or 10 am. Will the temperature still be freezing at the top? We'd like to get a ball park figure of the temperature so we won't have to overbundle ourselves. Cathy, <BR> <BR>The temperature is generally about 20 degrees lower on Haleakaka, I think, than it is at sea level. Your best bet is layers of cotton, long sleeves over tees, then you can peel off what you don't need. But you certainly don't need a down jacket or anything like that at that time of day. Good luck!

We were there two weeks ago around 10:30am. The temperature was perhaps around 50 BUT, at least 30 knots wind and gusting more with drizzles. Very very very cold. Highly recommend water and wind proof cloth since clouds come in very quickly. I had a jacket made out of a variant of micro-fiber, very light and compressible yet breathable and water/wind proof.

I was there last year -first week in May. drove a car to the top. lots of fog- thought about turning back- kept going- beautiful at the top! Cool- temp at ground level 80 and about 60 0n top. wore a light windbreaker- was fine! <BR>Enjoy -it is a great place- stayed and looked around over 2 hours. I also had on slacks but no where near as cold as the hotel had warned. We did go in the middle of the afternoon.

Based on what was said above, it sounds like Gore Tex and/or Polartec would be a good choice. <BR> <BR>Uh Oh! Now I'm gonna get accused, along with Cathy and the posters who recommended specific outerwear, of being in cahoots with the clothing industry!
