Haleakala sunset?
Everyone talks about seeing the sunrise at Haleakala; does anyone go for the sunset? My sister recommended it; she said she and her husband did it and found it much less crowded and just as beautiful. I must admit, the thought of getting up at 3am for the sunrise does not appeal to us, although maybe if we did it on our first day, before we got used to the time difference, we might be ok...what do you think?

You're right, if you go within the first day or two (before you adjust to the time difference) it's a lot easier.
Sunsets are great on Haleakala, but not as spectacular as sunrises. The reason is, a low cloud layer usually forms overnight east of the mountain (which you're above on the summit) and the sunrise comes up over these clouds, which is what makes it so majestic. |
I have done both, and it's the sunrise that is the most astonishing. That said, the sunset is beautiful, and the pink, blue and white puffy clouds in the area that afternoon/evening were gorgeous. But do the sunrise, really!

I concur, the sunrise is a must see. Check the weather if you have access to a computer because if the lee side clouds are too thick, there isn't a lot to see. It really is a long day if you go up there and can't really see the sunrise. Been there done that.
Another thought is to go with one of the Downhill bike groups, they drive you up so you can sleep, you see the sunrise followed by the very enjoyable downhill experience. |
I got there around 11am...and was amazed by the view. No matter what time of the day it is....it's a site like no other. Don't forget to hit the restaurant at the bottom of the mountain--great food!

I think lawngirl means Kula Lodge. We ate lunch there too, their food is excellent. This is on the road leading to the entrance to Haleakala NP, not in the park itself. We did sunrise, our first full day there (while we were still jetlagged from East coast time. Although it was 3am, leaving Kaanapali, it felt like 9 to us! Great way to do it, and it is truly beautiful! Don't think the sunset is nearly as spectacular. Trish
