Hairspray

I'm not sure when the previews start for the new play, but if anyone has seen it, please let me know how it is.
Many thanks.

Yes, a few of us posters have seen it, and the opinion is unanimous: Get tickets immediately! It's good.

Hi Howard, always appreciate your advice on New York. What is the story line for "Hairspray"? When does it open? Thanks for all the great post on New York.

Howard Aug 7th, 2002 04:55 AM

Serena, Hairspray is based on John Waters' cult film of the same name. My synopsis will probably not do justice to the show. However, here goes: It takes place in Baltimore in 1962 and concerns a chubby white girl's attempt to both intergrate an American Bandstand-type local TV show and win the show's contest. It sounds hokey, I know, but it works.
It's blessed with a extremely talented cast and a good musical score.
Still in previews, the show opens August 15th.

I agree with the others. It's going to be a big hit, I beleive it already is in fact! The current cast is great, don't know how it would play with different actors so see these. You can get tickets for the near future, but not the best seats. It's one of the few plays, I think, that is worth the price of admission.

Thanks Howard. I think I remember the movie. Will try and get tickets for a trip to the city next spring.

Buy tickets before it officially opens (8/15). Assuming good reviews (can't imagine otherwise), it will become much more difficult to get tickets.
