Not a destination spot, really. We used to vacation in Crested Butte many years and its just up the road from Gunnison which would be a nice visit. Its still a little muddy in May but not sure when you're going.
Hopefully, DebitNM will see this as she lives nearby and can help you out a lot.
Where are you coming from so we can help you out a little more?

Sorry, I don't really know anything about Gunnison. I know Million Dollar loop which is to the west [Ridgway, Ouray, Silverton, Telluride] as Sheila mentions, but not Gunnison.
Maybe this will help:

Will you drive through Gunnison on your way to Crested Butte? It's a town more influenced by a cowboy and ranching heritage, so it is a nice contrast to Crested Butte's ski and mountain culture. Not sure I'd leave Crested Butte in August, though! It's so pretty there. Have fun.

What about driving to Redstone for the day? I've done that as a day trip before from Crested Butte. but it was a number of years ago and i am not sure the old hotel is still in business and that there are any stores. When we did it, it was a great day trip.
you could also drive up to the Taylor Reservoir, rent a boat, have lunch at the restaurant there which is famous for their berry pie (forgot which kind of berry) then you keep on driving and there's an old mining town to walk around for a bit.
There's also Gothic just outside of Crested Butte or there's another resort outside of town whose name I am blanking on that you go up to for the day. There's also so many hikes and things to do in CB that you may find you don't need to go anywhere.
