Gulfstream Park (horses) with a kid?

During an upcoming family vacation, my wife will need to spend part of one day at a work-related event in Ft. Lauderdale. I am thinking of taking our 4 1/2 year old son, who is crazy for horses, to Gulfstream Park to watch the thoroughbreds race.

But, honestly, I'm not sure if this is an appropriate activity. I haven't been to a race track in many years, and don't recall the policy on kids. I'm sure hoping to hear it is as kid friendly as I think it is.

Each race track is a little different, so you'll need to review the track's website to see what Gulfstream offers. Their website looks like they heavily emphasize their casino and dining.

Honestly, a 4.5 year old will get bored at the races after one race. He will want to TOUCH the horses, and unfortunately, he will not be allowed to do so.

I can't speak to Gulfstream but in the tracks I have been too I would guess you'll need to keep him moving. Out to the paddock while they saddle up & warm them up, out to the track for the races + some meandering in between.

It is fine for kids. We took some young teenagers and a baby once and it was fun.

We've taken my 4 year old and 2 year old to the horse races here in Michigan twice over the summer and they really enjoyed it. They had fun picking the horses (we'd place the $2 bet obviously) and they ate hot dogs and popcorn and had a grand ol' time.

You will feel a bit weird and there will be some old degenerate gamblers there, but there should be some other kids there as well. And as long as your son is having a good time then that is good. The track here in Michigan has family nights all the time.

Actually I just remembered that is wasn't Gulfstream we went to. I think it was Calder, but I think Gulfstream is the nicer of the two.

Thanks very much everyone. I think the key will be access to the paddock...and hot dogs...and pop corn!
