I too am interested in walking tours in NYC. I've read of some of them in the Sunday Papers but have never done one. Thanks for info. RW
I don't know where you are and if you have access to it, but the magazine "Time Out New York" lists guided walking tours every week. If you can't find the magazine, check out the website newyork.citysearch.com

Try New York Citysearch at http://newyork.citysearch.com/. (I have no affiliation with them). It lists lots of walks, with contact info, and lots of other activities, too. It can be a bit confusing to navigate. To see walks scheduled for right about now, from home page click on City Scene, then from that page, click on Tours. You can search by date, too.

I've always wanted to take one of the Municipal Arts Society's walks -- they're an established nonprofit preservation group that has architectural historians, etc., leading walks -- but I live on the left coast and never seem to get the chance while in NYC. European friends of mine took their Greenwich Village tour and liked it -- very informative and historical, not at all cheesy or touristy. Their walks are on the Citysearch site; their phone is 212-935-3960.
