I don't think he was a guest....The Boston Globe said this morning that he was a cook at another inn nearby. It's a terrible tragedy. And I think that the daughter who was killed (and her friend) were killed a day or so AFTER her mother. She had gone to look for the mother. Can you imagine?

DebitNM, it struck me that some people get so worried about crime in large cities and thank they are safer in small towns. This horrible story is so ironic as the mother had a B&B in SF without having any problems (except for her SIL being killed in an auto accident). Yes the murderer was a cook at another B&B. This horrific story reminds me of the mother, daughter and foreign exchange student daughter from SA that was murdered near Yosemite some years ago by a motel employee. There are sickos everywhere, not just in large cities.

The details of these murders are so horrible it goes beyond belief.

Hi Debi, yes, and isn't that scary? I personally don't care to stay at B&B's for various reasons. One thing I have always wondered about is the security issue (type of locks on room doors etc) but I guess it depends on the establishment. I understand he admitted to the killings. Too creepy! Take care.

LoveItaly, you raise a good point about security. I admit I love staying at the old antebellum homes in our area, but a lot of the door locks are questionable, not to mention windows. I always do a thorough check upon entering our room, but I think we are often too lax at B & B's. This will cause us to be much more cautious.

Hi BayouGal. What got me thinking about the security at B&B's (I had never stayed at one) was when I went to a Chamber of Commerce Mixer which was held at a newely opened up B&B (converted from a grand old mansion). It was lovely BUT I immediately noticed the locks on the doors of the rooms were the original ones where they had one of those old fashion keys in the lock. Not very secure. Maybe I had been in the insurance business to long. And than sometime later a friend told me about a friends family member that had been attacked in the middle of the night at a B&B (somewhere in the midwest, don't remember where). Fortuantly the dear woman screamed so loud (she was by herself) other guests woke up and came running into her room and so she was not raped but she had been bruised and cut on her face and shoulders etc. The attacker was some kind of an employee of the B&B.

I know "stuff" can happen at hotels also but somehow I feel safer at a good hotel. I am sure however there are B&B's that are very security conscious. Take care.

I read that she closed the B&B in February. The guy had been living with them for several months.
The 2 others were a handyman and a friend.

On the security issue, B&B's that are AAA rated are required to have 2 locks on the room door. The guest only gets a key to one of them; therefore, the other can only be locked from the inside providing that extra security.

I did stay at a B&B in a very small, cute town in Mississippi. There were no locks on the door. I wasn't thrilled about it since I live in a large city and am always aware of my surroundings.

I also know a lady that was in a very nice and large hotel. Someone was in the hallway when she opened her room door. He pushed his way in behind her and raped her.

Crime can happen anywhere.

Hi uptowngirl, that is good information about AAA rated B&B's for those that enjoy staying in them.
And yes, crime can happen anywhere. That would be very uncomfortable to be staying somewhere without a lock on the door. Imagine you didn't sleep very deeply that night!

Uptown, you are correct about the victims and the inn being "closed" although the accused and one of the victims were still staying there -- long term residents I guess.

And you are correct about the B&B's in AAA guide needing to have 2 locks on the doors.

Oh goodness~ I have stayed at a few, (one was a former monastery with some weird vibes)..one was the ultra nice one in Juneau with rowboats, hot tubs, extra cozy(Pearson's Pond)...
I think all had locks but I don't remember details, since we have since become condo/resort travelers and two rooms, (get those kids out of our room types!)
I always say I'm more afraid of people than bears, wolves or whatever when we camp,(Ak. person here), so I have trouble wanting to pitch a tent and be old school with ds and sons..
no thanks, gimme a locking door, or I am a nighwatchman, and a darn nervous one at that..
