groceries in NYC?
Where would real people with kids shop for groceries within walking distance of 6th and 39th streets?
|
What do you mean by "real" people? Gosh, New Yorkers really do have kids and they do shop for groceries just like the rest of the you folks!
|
There many delis around the area, but I believe the closest NY style supermarket is D'Agostino at 578 3rd Avenue (38th Street)--about half a mile.
|
I assumed the OP isn't looking for the kind of deli at which Greta Garbo used to shop for cold cuts to make the sandwiches that constituted most of her diet.
|
That is not a primarily residential neighborhood, but if I lived there (and I am glad I don't!) I would shop at Whole Foods on 7th and 24th.
Greta Garbo shopped mostly for cold cuts at delis for most of her diet?? Where does that information come from?? |
|
Right. Or get deliveries from Whole Foods in Chelsea.
|
That really isn't a residential area - it's primarily offices - so there are no real supermarkets nearby. You need to head to a residential area (3rd & 38th is the closest if you want to create real dinners from scratch). But - if you want just a few things there should be a deli - with a few actual groceries nearby.
|
Oh - and don;t be surprised by how high prices are. Since the markets pay a much higher rent prices are way more than you find in other parts of the country - or even the suburbs of NYC.
|
Another idea is to head over to 9th Avenue where there is an Amish Market as well as a number of good specialty shops including one of my favorites, International Foods on 9th and 40th Street.
A few blocks further north on 9th is Amy's Bread. For meat, one of the best markets in Manhattan is Esposito's at 500 9th Avenue at 38th Street. They will deliver with a minimum order (used to be $50). |
Well, they all eat at Applebee's and Olive Garden, of course! ;-)
|
Whatever happened to Balducci's? Where did they move to???
|
Balducci's is at 14th St and 8th Ave.
|
Greta Garbo shopped mostly for cold cuts at delis for most of her diet?? Where does that information come from??</>
Observation. She was a neighbor when I lived in NYC. HTTY |
International Foods on Ninth Avenue is one of my favorite shops in NYC!
|
I have a friend who lives one block away ... not residentially friendly ... no convenient grocery stores ..
he orders from www.freshdirect.com |
Really??
In what deli did Garbo shop in near her apartment? |
For basic snacks, cereals and beverages, Duane Reade (which seem to be on every other block), is convenient.
|
..Are you thinking about the Southgate Sandwich shop? (I could not remember the name for a few minutes)
|
Regarding Garbo:
"Twice a week, she purchased groceries at the Nutrition Center, where her typical shopping list included eggs, honey, bran, dried apricots, English muffins, and whole milk. She bought her vegetables and fruit at a produce store on Fifty-third and Second. According to the proprietor of her favourite produce store, Garbo loved zucchini and artichokes and was “crazy about persimmons.” Meat was purchased at the Mid-City Food Market or Green Valley Foods on First Avenue. At the Dover Deli, she would buy lox, sturgeon, and Nova Scotia salmon. More expensive fare was purchased at a gourmet emporium on Madison Avenue or at Nyborg & Nelson, a Swedish deli on Fiftieth and Second." This information from: www.garboforever.com/Cooking_and_eating.htm |
Thanks, Neo!
Most of the stores have gone, alas, the way of all good things. But the names brought back some memories. I cannot remember Green Valley Foods, though. Places that are part of our everyday landscape vanish even from our minds with time.. There would also be glimpses of GG at a small bookstore (also gone) and a local wine shop (moved across the street); she would spend time taking with the owners of these two places.. |
Also, Neo, thank you for posting the website.
I have to block out some time later today... |
Do you know what Ronald Coleman had for breakfast? (Just a joke. I hate those smiley faces and I do not know how to make them.)
|
Garbo lived at 450 E. 52nd Street. She died in 1990, the same year I moved from NYC to Seattle. The deli she frequented was at 53rd Street and 1st Avenue. A friend who still lives in the neighborhood told me the deli is no longer in business.
New York Magazine used to have contests such as to dream up titles of books that could be written by well known people who haven't written a book. For Garbo, a wag volunteered "Sandwich Suggestions." |
Aduchamp1:
You are currently in the category of intelligent posters! But all status(es?) are provisional and can change at any time. If you learn to make those smiley faces, please remember that posting them here (or anywhere else, for that matter) will result in your immediate shift to another less-favorable category. Anyway I am FAR too young to remember Ronald Coleman! But why, then, do I have very clear memories of Van Johnson on East 54th Street? |
OK, ek, you're excused for mispelling Colman, since you were at most a wee babe during prime.
But, Adu, tsk tsk. |
Thanks, Howard!
|
Ooops, before someone catches me, I just noticed that I misspelled "misspelled"!
|
Darn it, I just got rid of my Collman Lantern and Coalman Mustard.
And I promise never to make smiley faces but I am sure I will do something else to lessen my status. |
Just make sure not to ask for advise on your itenery!
Those gaffes ensure a rapid reassignment to the Fodor's Hall of Shame. |
Bryndle,
There is an asian supermarket on 32nd street between Broadway and Fifth avenue. You can get lots of stuff there, the meat counter is not bad. If you are traveling and staying in NYC and want to pick up stuff to eat in the room, most of the drugstores (Duane Reade, Rite Aid, etc.) in the area have food and it is reasonably priced. If you have something specific in mind, let us know and I'm sure we can tell you exactly where to pick it up. If you are asking out of curiosity, alot of where families shop has to do with finances and transportion - people like me who work in NJ, CT or on LI shop there and bring the food home, lots of others will walk to the local supermarket like Gristede's, Met, DAGs and have the food delivered. Others order online and have it delivered. |
NIce to be back on the site, I finally got a password this afternoon, could't get my computer to log on with the old ones.
Ok back to the original question. The closest grocery store to 39th and 6th is probably the Food Emporium located at 8th and 50th, it is certainly within walking distance and you can probably get them to deliver the groceries after you shop for a minimum fee. There is also a D'Agastino also on 8th Ave another block north. Those are probably the closest grocery stores, but as others have pointed out, there are lots of delis in the area, and you might check out Jack's on 32nd between 6th and 7th (99 cent store for everything and lots of snacks, milk, soda, ice cream etc). Have a GREAT time while you are here. |
Thanks for all the info. There was nothing like this is a guide book. The puncuation of humor and trivia was a treat.
I guess I should have asked "Where do families shop for REAL food?". There was no insult intended. |
Methinks - and then there are people like me who regularly hit Costco in LIC and Fairway on 132nd St and occasionally Stew Leonards in Yonkers. And fill in almost daily with locally purchased stuff (sounds like I eat too much).
|
..and I am still trying to imagine a deli that was on the corner of First and 53rd Street where Garbo used to shop!!! The only possible place you (HappyTrails)
must mean was the Southgate Sandwich Shop between 53 and 52nd on the East Side of First Avenue..near the old Mayfair Restaurant which is also now vanished.. If you left in 1990 you would barely recognize our little corner of paradise these days! Although Garbo's block has not changed at all since then.. |
I agree with happytrailstoyou about the D'Agostino on 3rd & 38th probably being the closest supermarket.
|
A friend who still lives in the neighborhood tells me the deli Garbo and I used to frequent is no longer in business.
For those who would rather not contemplate GG having a sandwich for dinner, I am sorry. |
I used to see her in Southgate Sandwich shop but you threw me when you called that a deli..
